Hi Brenda,
I can give you an excerpt from a sworn disposition my GGGGgrandmother Mahala Atchley Long
made in 1893 in Boone Co. AR.
"...I lived [in TN] in seven miles of the chief,
Ross, and was well acquainted with him. My mother's maiden name was Martha Chambers
and her father's name was James Chambers, and he was a brother of Maxwell Chambers
who lived on Candy's creek in Hamilton County, Tennessee and who left there with the
Indians for the present Cherokee Nation. I know that he was a Cherokee Indian and was
enrolled in 1833 for the west...."
Mahala also mentioned she was with the Daugherty and Chambers families when they were
forted at Charlestown [TN] on Highwasa before the removal. She uses dates of 1833,1834 and
1835, but the Trail of Tears was in 1838-39.
My limited research located a Maxwell Chamber in NC, (I can't locate the notes right
now) but was before 1800. Many of the adjoining counties of TN, NC and VA due to boundary
changes are somewhat confusing as to present state locations. This Maxwell was in approx.
NWest NC in what is now probably Ashe Co.NC. From there some Chambers moved to Hamilton
Co. TN. Sorry, I can't be more specific until I find my notes.
Roger
