Marshall H. Chambers
Marshall H. Chambers died on Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999 in Sarasota, Fla. He was 74.
Born in New Haven, Conn., Mr. Chambers graduated from Hillhouse High School in New Haven
in 1943 and from Springfield College in 1950 with a bachelor of science degree and from
Columbia University Teacher's College in 1951 with a master's degree. He was a
master at the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J. from 1951 to 1990; assistant
house master for Dickinson House in 1951-1952; house master for Cleve House from
1954-1990; and he founded the lacrosse program at Lawrenceville where he was head coach of
the varsity team from 1959-1990.
Mr. Chambers summered on Nantucket and managed the Siasconset Casino for 29 years. He was
inducted into the Lawrenceville School Alumni-Athletic Hall of Fame on May 4, 1996 as well
as to the New Jersey Lacrosse Hall of Fame on June 7, 1997. He was a trustee of the
Siasconset Union Chapel and a member of the Meadows Country Club and Skinner's Golf
Club.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 aboard the destroyer USS Earle on convoy
duty in the Atlantic, later transferring to the Seabees on Okinawa. He was awarded the
American Theatre Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Medal.
Mr. Chambers is survived by his wife, Virginia G. Chambers; two sons, Marshall H.
Chambers Jr. and Samuel P. Chambers, both of Nantucket; and two sisters, Beverly B. Hall
and Barbara B. Lindsey, both of Naples, Fla.
The family will welcome friends Friday, Jan. 29 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kirby Arts Center on
the Lawrenceville Campus. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 30 at noon at
Edith Memorial Chapel, Lawrenceville School, Lawrenceville. The Rev. John William Wauters
and the Rev. Richard H. Downes will be officiating. Burial will be private at the
Lawrenceville Cemetery. A reception will follow the burial at Foundation House at the
Lawrenceville School. All are welcome to attend.
A memorial service will be held for Mr. Chambers in Sarasota, Fla. on Monday, Feb. 1, at
1 p.m. at St. James United Methodist Church, 2049 North Honore Ave., with the Rev. James
W. Sheffer officiating. A memorial service will also be held on Nantucket at a later date
this summer.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be made to the Marshall H.
Chambers Fund at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, 12902 Magnolia
Drive, Tampa, Fla. 33612.
