Message Board Post:
Close to thirty years ago, I started a project. I wanted to leave my children a clear
understanding of their roots in the western hemisphere, so the project set as a minimum
objective detailing the four major families of my wife and me, from their date and point
of origin in the new world to present. It didn't seem too daunting to me when I set
the ground rules, but it has taken almost thirty years, and I'm still at it.
The brick wall is my great grandmother, Elizabeth Chambers, who married John Mckinnon
(McKinnon/MacKinnon/Mackinnon) on 17 October 1857, in Tatamagouche, Colchester County,
Nova Scotia. This woman is whom my grandfather was named for; he carries her surname as
his middle name. And wouldn't you know, my mother decided my middle name should be
the same as my grandfather's so I could honor both he and his mother.
Now every other mystery in my diverse family has been answered to my satisfaction. But,
my great-grandmother is only found in two documents that I can find. She shows up as the
wife of John Mckinnon in the census of 1871 (Canadian) at age 35. What's odd here is
that the only two records in that census are my grand father and grand mother, no
children, yet they had ten, two or three of whom were very young in 1871, so where are
they? The other record I have found is from "Canada, Births and Baptisms, 1661 -
1959", where she is listed as the mother of my grandfather, Edward Chambers Mackinnon
(as it is spelled in the record). Beyond those two records, I have found nothing.
Why is this important? Well, for one thing, inquiring minds want to know, and for
another, there is a serious medical issue that needs resolution. Somewhere in the
interaction of MacKinnons and Chambers, and most likely from a Chambers, a killer disease
was introduced to the family. It killed my mother, my grand mother (she was a Chambers),
several of her siblings and her ancestors. What we need to know is GG Mother Elizabeth
Chambers' ancestry; was she related to the Chambers family my grand father married
into? If so, how close? Did she carry the Huntington's gene? If so, who were her
ancestors, and how far back does the gene go?
Help me find the answer to the Elizabeth Chambers mystery. She was born in the Wallace
area, or perhaps Tatamagouche, in about 1836. She is believed to have passed away in the
area of Malagash, Nova Scotia, some time after 1877. Beyond that, I have nothing. Any
information, any lead will be appreciated!
Thank you for your assistance,
Klee Chambers Dobra
