A yDNA test has just recently come in from the Chambers in Mackinac Island, Michigan. It
is R1a1a. It is a match for mine 12/12, 24/25 and 32/37. Since the Mackinac Chambers came
from the Clew Bay area in County Mayo, Ireland. This proves the link between the North
Mayo (Castlebar) Chambers and the Newport Chambers. The mutations, 5 in 37, shows that the
families split back when the first MacCambridge/Cambridge in Ulster changed his name (or
had it changed) to Chambers. The split goes back to the time Cromwell sent the Catholic
families who survived his genocide to Connaught. The Antrim Catholics were sent to County
Mayo. There is also some family history in Newport that some families came from Tyrone to
Mayo ahead of Cromwell.
For me this is great news! It shows that my Chambers family name goes back about 400 years
and the R1a1a haplotype is not the result of a recent adoption event.
The Chambers family DNA project seems to have been discontinued and I can't get my
results on it. However, FTDNA keeps their own project where I am listed.
Please consider testing.
