Documentation is hard to find but I have the following circumstantial
evidence concerning Col. David Chambers. I believe he was the son of
John Chambers of Somerset Co NJ who died 1767 leaving a will naming a
son, David. I believe this is the David who married 1) Ann Gaston 2)
Sarah Sloan both "neighbors" to the Chambers. Ann and Sarah were
cousins. John Chambers owned property in Amwell Twp. Hunterdon Co NJ
where David lived during the Revolutionary War.
This John Chambers is the only Chambers buried in the Basking Ridge
Presbyterian cemetery. Some Presbyterians from this area moved to the
Craig Settlement in Allen Township Northampton Co. Pennsylvania.
There we find David Chambers' name on a a parcel of property on the
east bank of the west branch of the Delaware (now Lehigh) River. In
1761 he was a member of a group that donated money to build a
residence for the minister. The churches at Basking Ridge, the Craig
Settlement and Amwell were all under the direction of the same
Prsbyterian "board."
To further support the idea that David was the son of John of Somerset
note the surname Patterson. Andrew Patterson witnessed the will of
John Chambers; the daughter of David Chambers married a Patterson and
a John Chambers (whom I believe to be the nephew of David) was
appointed to an office in NE Pennsylvania by Alexander Patterson. He
and David Ayers (who was definitely the nephew of David Chambers)
lived in the Hunter Settlement; this is not far from the Craig
Settlement and was also home to Scotch Irish Presbyterians from
Basking Ridge.
