Greetings
I'm a new subscriber from the Des Moines, Iowa area.
I would very much like to hear from anyone with Chambers ancestors from
North Carolina in the late 1700's who came from Ireland; I'd also like to
hear from anyone with ancestors from the New York City area of 1800-1830
area. John Chambers lived in NY City in 1829 when he witnessed the will of
(Dr.) George CUMMING. I believe that George's first wife was either a
CHAMBER or that her immediate line was a CHAMBERS line in NC. George was
born 1771 in NC--I believe his parents came from County Down, Ireland in the
1700's. George and his wife left NC abt 1790 to claim a land inheritance in
County Down, Ireland, which may have come from the CHAMBERS line and I find a
Chambers family with church notes from Newry or Rathfriland in County Down,
Ireland. When George Cumming lived in County Down, at least three of
their children were born there: Hance in 1794; Thomas in 1796 and John
Chambers aboard ship in March of 1802 as George was bringing his family to
New York City to live. His wife died in 1802--perhaps in childbirth. He
remarried in 1803 to Margaret GALLAHER/GALLAGHER. Though the CHAMBERS line
George CUMMING married into must have been from NC, when George CUMMING made
his will in NY City in 1829, John Chambers witnessed it as one close to
George CUMMING. Others known to John Chambers and George were Alex.
HENDERSON and John HALLAGAN.
It is quite possible that the Chambers line of NC came to NC through PA,
possibly the Chester Co or Allegheny Co area as the CUMMING line appears to
have come that way.
In checking for the CHAMBERS and CUMMING lines in NC I find three
counties where families by both names lived abt 1785: Caswell Co, Surry Co
and Onslow Co. Would anyone with CHAMBERS lines in these counties please
contact me and let me know about your CHAMBERS ancestors in those areas?
