I and a friend have been working on the William and Robert Chambers family of early
Jerusalem, Yates Co., NY, who are in the 1800 NY Census.
We think that our ancestor John Chambers who also is listed in Jerusalem, NY, in 1800 now
Milo, NY, was related to these two Chambers mentioned above.
Robert Chambers earlier married Susannah Scott in Luzerne Co., PA.
John Chambers was also of the area of Luzerne Co., PA.
Possibly, John Chambers was listed in the1790 Census of Montgomery, Orange Co., [then
Ulster], NY, near the Comfort and Moul families.
It has been my guess that William Chambers of 1800 Jerusalem, NY, was William Chambers who
was listed next to Jonas Kleyn in the 1790 Shawangunk, Ulster Co., Census. Shawangunk
adjoins Montgomery.
My great . . . great uncle Victor Putman married a daughter of Jonas Kleyn's.
It appears from the Swangunk, Wawarsing, and Hurley Dutch Reformed Church records that
William married Charity McDowell and had a son John baptized in 1790 at the Dutch Reformed
Church and a daughter Elilzabeth baptized in 1792.
These records are available at
ancestry.com.
William Chambers of Middlesex later of Onondaga Co., NY, sold land in 1814 in Middlesex,
Yates Co., NY:

.
This William Chambers appears to have been William of 1800 Jerusalem, NY.
William Chambers was listed in the 1810 NY Census in Camillus, Onondaga Co., NY.
It seems that from the 1840 Census where William is listed in his son John Chambers'
household and the 1810 Census of Onondaga that William Chambers was born between 1766 and
1770 or about 1768.
So, William Chambers was about 22 years old when his first child John Chambers was born in
Ulster Co., NY.
The 1800 Jerusalem, Yates Co., NY, Census shows that William Chambers was born before
1755, but I think that record may be wrong.
John Chambers [1790-] the son of William Chambers is in the 1820 Census in Sterling,
Cayuga Co., NY, and he had a son John Chambers, Jr., who was born in Cayuga Co. about
1821.
The family eventually moved west to Ohio where William Chambers died in 1844 in Gustavus,
Trumbull Co., OH.
It is possibly that this family is related to Jan Shammers and Cornelia Van Aken of early
Hurley, NY.
