Joseph Chambers b. June 18, 1778 Va. died 1840 Villa Rica, Georgia. He came to Buncombe
Co., N. C. ca 1795 with his father James Chambers and his brothers, Elihu and William(
ref: Annals of Haywood County, N. C.) Joseph was a Representive to the N. C. Legislature,
1814, 1815, 1819,1821.
No record of his ever being an Indian Agent or Ambassador. It is unknown what happened to
James the father. He may have died in Haywood Co. or moved on West with some other family
members in the mass exodus around 1810, when so many of the Chambers left the Western N.
C. mountains. Joseph left 1834 with his family for the gold field in Villa Rica, Georgia.
William went west. Elihu is reported to have died in Habersham Co, Georgia. Jame's
daughter, Margaret married George Cathey and they went west. Many Chambers went through
the western mountains of N. Carolina, but as the lands opened to the west around 1800,
many of them left, and left few records. We do know that James' sons, William, Elihu,
and Joseph lived for a time in Bumcombe/Haywood on the Piegon River, at the present day
site of Clyde, N. Carolina, also the location of Chambers Mountain. A good book on the
Chambers is "Chambers History - Trails of the Centuries", by Wlliam D. Chambers
1925
I have no information on the James Chambers that married Mary Polly Buff in Haywood Co. in
1823, nor do I have any info on Lucinda Chambers b.1818 married Joshua Duncan.
