We are searching for burial records, marriage and children born to John Chambers of Nova
Scotia.
"The old stone house at Poplar Grove as it looks today........It is the oldest house
standing in West Hants today and there is evidence that it goes back even furtherr than
the public record states.
SEASONED TIMBERS published by Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia, states that John Chambers
built the Stone House in 1761. Ancient records handed down through generations in local
families, however, state that Chambers rebuilt the house from what remained of an
authentic Acadian home, and that it had been built of field stone in its original state.
The house, this old hand-written record states, was twice partially destroyed by fire.
The first time purposely after the expulsion of the Acadians, a fire which burned off the
top section, leaving the stone work partially standing. John Chambers reconstructed the
stonwork, added a top floor and roof of wood and enlarged the basement. Later it again
was ignited by burning flax, causing the collapse of some brickwork, and again built up.
The above aritcle was printed in some publication called Seasoned Timbers and the John
Chambers could possibly be the father of my ggg grandmother Jane Chambers, but I am trying
to find how to get ahold of someone who knows how to find birth records.
If anyone knows who to contact Please get ahold of me at robins_genes(a)hotmail.com.
Thanks. Bye from Robin
