Hi, Charleen. It looks like we definitely share a common ancestory. My great-grandmother
Agnes Hudson (nee Chambers)lived on the Hudson family farm just outside Dugald, Manitoa
and laterly lived as a widow in the village itself. She raised a large family including my
father Douglas Hudson. My cousin and her husband still live in the farmhouse.
I have no direct memories of Agnes since she died when I was a small child, but I've
heard from others in the family a bit about her. Cross referencing the 1906 Census, it
looks like your ancestor William Chambers (born 1860 in Scotland) was her older brother by
about 10 years. He was born just before the family emigrated to Canada from Scotland,
while she was one of brood of children born in Grey County, Ontario. In the 1880s, it
looks like they emigrated en masse to North Dakota, before moving on to Manitoba.
The 1906 Canada Census shows her brother William and his wife Catherine with some of the
people you mentioned living in Manitoba west of the Red River (Leslie, Sidney) but I have
never heard about them through my father (Douglas Hudson).
Agnes and her husband (Wlliam Hudson) did spend time in the 1890s in Glaston North Dakota
where several children (including my grandfather Gordon) were born. My father spoke of
cousins in ND which suggests that at least someone from either the Hudsons or Chambers
stayed behind. I have a picture of the ND cousins from the 1920s but no names to add to
them. Perhaps you have some clues?
On whether William Chamber's wife Catherine was a Hudson, I see that Agnes'
husband William's mother's name was Catherine and had a sister called Catherine
born in Ontario in 1864. But I haven't been able to find anything else about her.
Intrigingly the 1916 Census shows a family of Hudsons (head of household Joseph) living in
Springfield, Manitoba (which is the RM for Dugald) with a 72 year old Catherine and a 39
yo William living together. Could this be another link between us?
Another question concerns our common ancestor James Chambers form in Scotland in the
1820s, emigrated to Ontario in the 1860s, then re-emigrated to ND in the 1880s or 90s, and
finally re-re-emigrated back to Manitoba about 1900 before finally dieing there in 1917.
I've been researching his life in Scotland in order to find his origins, as well as
those of his reportedly Irish wife Elizabeth Bell. Chambers is a very common name and
frequently misspelled in historic records, so I have many routes to choose from in the
Scottish records. Have you had any luck in chosing which threat to pull?
Best regards, Michael Hudson in Vancouver, BC Canada
PS I have my own account on Ancestry.ca using my grandfather Gordon Hudson as the basis
for my Hudson tree, though much of the Chambers information resides for now on the
Ancestry.co.uk tree.
