Hi Mike,
So nice of you to share so much information with Chambers descendants! I am not a
descendant of the Chambers surname but I'm hoping you might have the Chambers
information I'm looking for or point me in the right direction.
My interest is in tracing a John Chambers who married a Rebecca Dobson in the St.
Peter's Parish Church of Talbot Co., MD on Dec 28, 1729. I know nothing about this
John Chambers but have a strong suspicion that he might have ended up in Pennsylvania in
the area of Cumberland Co. but I'll get to that in a minute as I want to share a bit
about the Rebecca Dobson who married him.
Rebecca Dobson was born on Feb 2, 1711, to William (Sr.) and Ann Dobson in Countrywide,
Talbot Co., NC. I've had no luck finding a death record for her. A record of her death
is not in the St. Peter's Parish Church records where her birth records are, nor is
there any mention of her and John Chambers or any of their children AFTER their marriage,
which suggests that they moved from the area.
The birth records of at least 6 of Rebecca's SIBLINGS are included in those church
records, including a William (Jr.)Dobson born Dec 25, 1727 (who later ended up in
Cumberland Co., and married a Martha Polk, dau. of James and Margaret Pollock of Hopewell
Twp. Cumberland Co., PA (I descend from Martha Polk's brother, Capt. William Polk of
Accomac Co., VA)
The first land record I've been able to find on this William Dobson (Jr.) in
Pennsylvania was dated 1765 (then) Cumberland Co.(now Bedford Co.) near the present day
town of Cesna. He was shorted 'drove off by the Indians' (per the warrant
application of an Edward Ward, who took out a warrant for Wm Dobson's land) and Wm.
Dobson (Jr.) later applied in 1766 and was granted land in (then) Cumberland Co., (now)
Perry Co.on Sherman's Creek. He and his wife Martha removed back to North Carolina and
settled in (then) Surrey Co. (now Stokes Co.) where they lived out their lives.
Back to the disappearance of John and Rebecca (Dobson) Chambers from the St. Peter's
Parish Church records as well as the lack of mention in those records of the death of her
mother, Ann and stepfather, John Ervin, nor any further mention after his birth of
Rebecca's brother, William Dobson (Jr..
My theory is that John Chambers, his wife Rebecca Dobson) and his in-laws, Ann (Dobson)
and John Ervin might have removed after 1733 to (then) Cumberland Co. (now) Bedford Co.
and took William Dobson (Jr) with them, which would explain Wm. Dobson Jr.'s
appearance in the area.
Rebecca Dobson's father (William Dobson Sr.) died in 1733, and his widow Ann remarried
3 months later to a John Ervin/Irvin at the St. Peter's Parish on Sept 2. At that
time, William Dobson Jr. would have only been 6 years old.
I've scoured the internet (with no luck) for an early John Chambers in North Carolina
or Pennsylvania who had a wife named Rebecca. I would greatly appreciate any info you or
anyone else might have about this couple.
