There is no doubt that shelling out over $100 for the Y-DNA test can be daunting for
someone on a fixed income. I can only answer your question in terms of its worthiness
towards my own research.
What were the benefits to my research? The test confirmed my relationship to a family of
Chambers' living in Tennessee during the 1800's. My direct ancestor moved from
Tennessee to Indiana prior to 1840, although there was plenty of speculation about his
link to this family, there was no documentation that actually proved the relatedness. To
date I have two exact matches at 12 markers; both lay claim to one Thomas Chambers who
lived and died in Campbell/Scott County Tennessee.
There is no doubt, lots of information available to us on the internet. Literally
hundreds of family tree's available for us to peruse at our leisure. I myself have
seen quite a few on my own line; however I can't tell you whether they are fact or
merely fantasy. If I believed what people had written, I would say that my family roots
were in Scotland. However, after the Y-DNA test the evidence is pointing toward a common
English ancestor.
It is my belief that as more Chambers' become involved in the Y-DNA project it will
narrow our research efforts. Let's face it, for those of us lucky enough to have deep
ancestral roots in the U.S., we are unlucky in that the documentation available to us is
lacking at best. As more people test and collaborate their research efforts the
documentation we have found will take on greater meaning.
Having paid full price, I know of no group or sponsors to help defer the cost. Nor can I
tell you that the test will be worth the price. I can only tell you that it was helpful
to my own research.
I hope this helps.
