William is on the 1860 Census as being 2 years old - so that means that he was born 1857
to 1858. I have been told Sarah Pressy was born 1861 to 1863 - Peter Pressey was also
supposed to have been enlisted during the Civil War during this time period. My
assumption was that Sarah was born - that India died - Sarah and perhaps also William
ended up with relatives, perhaps using their name rather than her own. I can find no
record of India's death however. It is also possible they divorced.
I did find the 1850 Census with India listed with many other Chambers in the household and
also Kinmans nearby. Both names were common in Pike county at that time (Indiana). There
seems to be a wide variation in her age on the 2 census records.
There is also a India Chambers in another part of Indiana who married a Thomas Johnson -
again the age is off - but it is possible it is the same person.
Peter Pressey eventually married an Elizabeth Mitchell (widow) who had children - I have
found several census records of daughters with different names living with them. One of
Elizabeth Mitchell's sons actually married one of his stepsisters. It is possible
that one of the other girls is Sarah.
Peter Pressey may have been married other times as well.
