The list has been VERY quiet lately, so thought I'd share a little something
I received in email today.
Maybe someone in "the family" can help?
Keith, the egroups list I'm forwarding this to dwells mainly on the Chambers
of Scott County. There are quite a few of us. =)
I'm also forwarding it to the chambers @rootsweb email list also.
The more people involved, the more help you may get. =)
Brenda

Subject: Chambers in Scott Co. and beyond
Dear Brenda,
I spent about five hours on your web site yesterday and really appreciate
the information that you, and the others you listed, have posted for
others
to use. Your information has helped in my search for family
beginnings.
I've lived with family legends/myths for some time and have found a few
that were true while others have remained elusive. One of the largest
hurdles that I have left to get over is my grandfathers father. You
listed
my grandfather in "Are these your Chambers?" below the
Dawes/Guion Miller
1898-1914: Lorenzo D Chambers. (By the way I wonder where "D" was found
associated with Lorenzo? Was it from a Census? His name was Lorenzo Dow
Chambers.) Hulda Elliott, his mother, had a brother eight years her
senior, named Lorenzo.
I understand that the Court House in Scott Co. caught fire on three
different occassions, which doesn't seem to help my quest! I'll write the
story that has been past on to me if you care to read it. If not, tell me
to SHUT UP and I'll not bother you again. I hope to make this interesting
but have not embellished what I've been told but I should let you know
that
L.D. (Lorenzo Dow) was a rounder but a hard worker in the coal mines
of
Wva., Va., Tenn., and Kentucky and was loved "almost" unconditionally by
his eight daughters and two sons that lived through the depression years.
A
daughter and a son died within two years of their birth. These
children
were all brought into this world for him by one resliant woman named of
Lucinda Draughn who was loved unconditionally by all her children. The
Draughns are another but large part of my quest. Lucinda became ill in
the
late 30's and LD was advised to move to a higher climate which he
did.
Looking back, the doctor was taliking about Arizona or Colorado but LD
moved out of the "holler" on to the mountain top.
LD's mother, Hulda Elliott, married Elbert Chambers. LD's father, Elbert,
was killed in a saw mill accident some time before LD was a year old.
(The
family story says around Honey Creek, which as it turns out is a
real
place. The U.S. Geological Survey has a map listed in Scott Co. as Honey
Creek with there ID number attached.) Hulda survived without remarrying
until 2-7-1895 when she married Alvin Ellis.
Conflict number 1. Under the heading on your web page "Chambers Marriages
in Scott County, Tennesse" a marriage is listed on page 3of5 about Albert
Chambers marring Hulda Elliott on 4-7-1892. I've seen a copy of the
license and big as Dallas it says Albert! I didn't find out until after
LD
died that he didn't read nor write, other than a signature of
sorts. It
seems even my mother, his daughter in law, knew it to be true. It wasn't
important or possible shame associated with it kept it from family
conversation. Approximately 10 years befor his passing (1984) the copy of
the marriage liscence with "Albert" on it was being discussed and passed
around when he recognized that everyone was talking Albert. He made it
known that his fathers name was Elbert not Albert. WOW! What? But the
liscence says Albert.
LD grew up in the house of Alvin Ellis and was treated as an Ellis! LD
married Lucinda Draughn as an Ellis, so the story goes. The family story
says that the Scott County Court House burned and folks were asked to
return and help the county officials fill in the blanks left by the fire.
The story says that Lucinda wanted things put right and that their married
name should be Chambers not Ellis. I've been told and have no reason to
not beleive that the Scott County Court House has burned three times. I
have only one date here someplace in my files of around 1946. ?Another
conflict?
Conflict 3 may be in the folks that signed off on the "rites of matrimomy"
and "bond" to the state of Tennesse paper for Scott County when
"Albert" /
Elbert and Hulda were married. Alvin Ellis was there as his signature is
on the form, if this is a original and not a remake after a fire?
The only Albert recorded is too old and was a verteran of the War for
Southern Independance. I have some copies of his war record. But there
are several Elberts about and one is the correct age in the 1880 Census
(10
yrs.). I haven't been able to find him again either. A dear
cousin of
mine has been working to resolve this delima, so I have copied her on this
note also. I hope you do not mind.
I noticed that you included Clan Cameron on your Web page. I've been a
member of the Red River Branch of Clan Cameron for five years and have
traveled to Scotland and had the opportunity to meet the Lochiel at
Achnacarry. He is a nice fellow of 85 or so and as spry as can be.
I hope I haven't bored you and pray that you may shed some light on what
little I know.
Thanks,
S. Keith Chambers
