I have copies of his birth certificate, his death certificate, and the original
application for social security. The only information on them is the Harry Schwartz, born
in England, age 29 in 1919 as his father, and Doris Chambers, age 21 in 1919, from
Indiana, as his mother. I was able to find out that he was cremated. He had remarried
and I have his wife's name but she preceded him in death. He had a step daughter,
according to a brief obituary I found, but I have not been successful in locating her.
I requested information about his service record but unfortunately his years of military
fell into the time frame when so many records were destroyed by fire. I did receive
confirmation that he had served in the army and his years of service which confirmed what
I already had but no other personal information was available through that source.
He and my husband's mom were married only four years. He left, joined the Merchant
Marines. He occasionally but rarely made contact. He never shared any information about
his family and the little bit of correspondence my husband's mom had with a cousin of
his has not given any information other than his (cousin) name in California. No contact
from him since 1948 and I have not been able to trace him.
I have looked through every source I can think to allow me to add his family to our tree.
I certainly welcome any other ideas you might have! Thank you very much for making
contact.

If your husband's father has passed away, try for a death certificate or
an obit. These have quite a bit of info on them. Also a copy of his
social security application (which he filled out) has information. The
death cert and social security application cost, but you might get lucky
with the obit and someone will look it up for free. Just go to the
location query board at rootsweb and type in your request.

Have you tried the online telephone info for the cousin? Hlso, he might
have died and may be listed in the social security index at rootsweb.
These are just suggestions. I would suggest (if you haven't already
done this) that you post to the Schwartz Query Board at rootsweb and at
Genforum.com. You might also check out
Gencircles.com.
