~ WILLIAM R. CHAMBERS ~
William R., son of Alexander and Polly Chambers, was born in Bartholomew
County, Indiana, November 25, 1842, and departed this life at his home in
Osceola, Iowa, after a brief illness of six days, April 4, 1916, aged 73
years, 4 months and 6 days. He came with his parents to Iowa when but two
years of age, settling in Marion County on a farm near Bussey. Here he grew
to manhood and on the 19th day of November, 1865, was united in marriage
with Nancy J. Smith. To this union three children were born, Anna Crabb of
Osceola, Iowa, J.M. of Wymore, Nebraska, and one dying when seven years of
age. The companion of his youth died August 11, 1907. He was then married
to Fannie Garrison of Rippey, Iowa, March 23, 1909, with whom he lived
happily until death removed him from this life.
The deceased was converted to Christ when young and united with the U.B.
Church and his home has always been a Christian home, his children growing
up under the influence and teaching of the gospel of Christ. He and his
wife and daughter Ruth, united with the M.P. Church of Osceola four years
ago.
Bro. Chambers heard the call of his country and enlisted in the army in
August 1861, and was released from service by an honorable discharge in
August 1865, having served more than four years in the defense of his
country. He was in sixteen general engagements and had one hundred and
twenty-one days of skirmish fighting.
The deceased leaves to mourn their loss the companion of his age, the two
children above mentioned, and the adopted daughter, Ruth, eight
grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, four brothers, besides more
distant relatives and a host of friends who mourn their loss. May the
comfort of God's blessing go with those who mourn.
The funeral was held from the Home April 5th at 3 p.m. conducted by his
pastor J.C. Leonard, assisted by J.H. Tice of the Presbyterian Church. The
body was taken to Rippey, Iowa, where appropriate services will be held
after which the mortal remains will be laid to rest in the adjoining
cemetery, there to await the resurrection morn.
