Thanks to Bruce for this opportunity to air my kin. So here
goes : [ The following is the fine detective work of Virginia Westbrook
Turner of SC, my double cousin thru Agnes Elizabeth (Dickey) Chambers
who married John Kelsey Chambers ( my G grandpa) after he came home from
the Civil War.}
John Dickey was born in Co. Antrim, Ire., on Feb. 14, 1808. He came to
this country when he was18 years old. Coming by sail vessel in 1826, he
was 3 mo. making the trip. On the same boat were Steve , Richard , John
Kearny and an aunt of theirs.
John Dickey came to take care of an aged Aunt Jean Miller and Nancy
Miller. After Nancy's death , he inherited her property. The plantation
on which we live is part of the property. [Stover's note; Virginia is
speaking of herself and husband, E.Y. T., I think. I glory in the spunk
of all decendents of John Dickey to hold onto and pay taxes on property
they now own.]
John Dickey was a prosperous farmer, a slaveholder { Stover note: so far
as I can determine there was only one slave owned by John Dickey, a
blacksmith , for which John Dickey paid $ 1500, a huge sum in those
days. The Smith was probably treated like an old friend and handled
very carefully because he probably made wads of cash for John D. .
Ole John D. served as magistrate for Chester District (four years) .
And later was elected to the office of Probate Judge serving from 1874
to 1878. {S.N.: Benjamin Chambers ( son of John I, "Fifty Families" by
Nancy U. Chambers) also served for 22 years in the same capacity in York
District SC. All these fine Chambers' are no blood relation to me,
although Ben did probate the will of my GGGG grandfather, David C.[ died
1843].
A post office was established at the home of John Dickey and he became
postmaster. This was know as Wallace Post Office.
Growing flowers was John D.'s hobbyand he grew many varieties of old
fashioned flowers, taking great pride in sharing these with his
friends.
He was twice married. First to Mary Ann Adams in 1836. To this union
were born six children: William, David, John C. Sara, Martha , and Agnes
Elizabeth. (S.N. Agnes E. (Dickey) Chambers/Orr was later to marry John
Kelsey Chambers after he came home after the Civil War { end ended in
1865 with Grant's surrender to Lee at Appomatox Court House in VA.
Opps, make that Lee to Grant. ) David Dickey Chambers was the only
issue of that marriage.
Secondly, John married Jeanie Crook . Of the children of that
marriage, William, David, and John C. Dickey were all soldiers in The
Civil War. David was wounded severely at the battle of Seven Pines,Va.
and died several days later at the hospital in Richmond. { The David
named in the diary of Agnes E. (Dickey) Chambers { written
1924-1925-1926-1927-1928} was David Stark Dickey, one and the same. David
Stark D. was a soldier in Co. A &B, 6 SC infantry and held the rank of
Private. According to the diary of Agnes E. Dickey, David S. Dickey wa
buried in Richmond Va. . In Hollywood Cemetery , I think, with 2
Federal American Presidents and Jeff Davis, Confederate President and
17,000 Confederate soldiers , 8000 of them "unknown".
End of Part I, John Dickey,Ggrandfather to David Dickey Chambers.
Thanks to Virginia W.T. And to Agnes Dickey C. for her wonderful diary
which took me back to her time. She was a tough, kind , compassionate ,
intelligent southern lady whom I greatly admire.
Back in a while with more. To all who
may read this: God bless and may we all find the long lost kin!
Bye for now.
Stover
