Hi Polly,
You're right in the fact that if you were poor and were a share cropper
and traveled around trying to make a living few records can be found
that help. The other problem I'm having is the fact that too many lazy
or incompetent census takers didn't do their job. And then of course is
the problem that many didn't even know how to spell their name or took
whatever name the census taker wrote down. While my DNA may have lead
me to the larger family to which I belong, it didn't help me with the
immediate family. I really have no idea who my ggf father was but now
realize he came from the Chambers family in Abbeville County, if the
research is correct. The only problem here is that my gf told my
brother the family came South from Pa and not from Va. as the family in
Abbeville Count did. The other problem I have is Moses Chambers, born
in SC in about 1798 but I can't find him until 1830 in Polk Co. Tn. I
think he was my ggf's uncle but he could have been his grandfather. I
say uncle because my gf's brothers referred to his children as cousins.
And then the last problem I have is the fact that the names in the
Abbeville Clan don't seem to match the names my ggf used to name his
children but does seem to match the Chambers in Rowan County, NC that
came south from Lancaster Pa. in the mid-1700's. And then there's the
problem I have with the Philip Chambers clan. One of them has the same
middle name as my ggf and tells me that his father said my gf and his
gf were distant cousins. DNA proves we're not of the same family.
Well, so much for DNA. Either way, Moses was born in SC and my gggf
was born in SC but he is unknown. I've thought about taking each
Chambers in SC in 1800 and looking to see which ones had a boy less
than 10 years old. See if I can track them in any way and see where it
leads. Have any suggestion.
Thanks for the email. I thought they did have a test now for maternal
linkage. And by the way, I only submitted a sample and have nothing to
do with the project. I just think it can help me know where to look
now. Do you have any suggestions. I live in upstate SC and records
should be readily available but SC was a very poor state for keeping
records of early settlers!!

I just wish they would figure a way to untangle the mitchondria and I
would do the test in a midnight second. My Andrew and Mary Chambers
only had daughters. And they lived about the smae history of migration
that yours did. Andrew's father, Jacob, was in Tennessee because the
census says he was born there, then in Lumpkin/Cherokee Georgia and
then to Wright County, Missiour, His middle name was Bennett and there
is a Bennett living in Pope County,Arkansas about 1900 so I figure it
might be him. They sure did know how to hide information for poor,
dirt farm guys.
Anyway. Good luck with your DNA project. I am kind of disappointed
in not being able to trace my Chambers line.

Maybe many of the Chambers don't realize there's a Chambers DNA site
where one can send a sample of their DNA and hopefully match up with
some cousins or others in the family. It just may open up a new avenue
for you to find those missing Chambers. It has given me new hope in
finding my gggf. I know he was born in South Carolina and had
relatives in TN, GA, and NC. Before I was trying the shotgun approach
but now I can limit my search to specific areas. Here's the web page
address.

Hope many of your will consider joining the list. You may be glad you
