Sharon & List,
Thanks for all your information. There was a lot to go through and New
Years' Eve party planning got in the way. I agree, there must be a
connection, but finding the common link is still alluding me. I tried to do
internet searching today but my service provider wasn't able to complete a
connection.
I will insert my answers within your text below in CAPS. I have some
additional WHITTEMORE information (mostly local marriage index listings) I
will send later that I have come upon and haven't found a connection with
yet. But you might see something.

Hi Shelly,
Your information is incredible!!!!!! Thanks for taking the time to share
your Whittemore information. There is no doubt we are related, BUTTTTTT
where do we connect. Hopefully by sharing some more information with each
other something will look familiar. So am going to give you a lot of
"stuff" for you to sift through and see if anything looks familiar.
Do you know who Frank's parents were???
NO, FULL GIVEN NAME IS "FRANKLIN
A." PER POLK'S GRAND RAPIDS CITY
DIRECTORY OF 1929 & IGI RECORD FOR SON, IRA JOHNSON WHITTEMORE.
My G. Grandfather being William Lafayette WHITTEMORE was born 1842 in Adams
Co., IN. He lived in Rutland, Wall Lake-Barry Co., Delton area, and other
places.
William's father was George W. Whittemore b. March 12, 1818 in NY. (no
city, just NY).
FRANK WHITTEMORE WAS BORN 9 OCT 1844 IN SACHETS HARBOR, NEW YORK
George md. Hannah Peterson b. March 08, 1817 in Jefferson
Co., OH. Hannah being born in OHIO might be the OHIO connection.
I AGREE.
**************
From my "Notes" on George is the following:
"George and Hannah traveled back and forth to OHIO a great deal. George
would get a "wondering" to go to Ohio and would tell Hannah to get her hat
and they would be gone."
This wondering accounts for the 1860 and 1870 Census showing their children
being born in different states.
Source: (is from an elderly Whittemore cousin living in Augusta who has
given me alot of facts on the line that goes back to George and Hannah.)
THIS
APPLIES TO FRANK & RUBY AS WELL.......Children of:
Franklin A. "Frank" WHITTEMORE & Ruby Elizabeth RAMSEY
| Ruby Minerva ("Minnie" per Leonard HOERNER) WHITEMORE
| b. 7 Oct 1869, (Hastings?), Rutland Twp., Barry County, MI
| Caroline "Carrie" WHITTEMORE
| b. ca 1872, Ohio
| Ira Johnson WHITTEMORE
| b. 23 Oct 1873, Ashtabula, Ohio
| Clara Frances "Frankie" WHITTEMORE
| b. 10 Mar 1876, Caledonia, Caledonia Twp., Kent Co., MI
(IGI states birth place of Rutland Twp., Barry Co., MI
-I think the Rutland location may be more correct,
--Kent Co. Clerk had no birth record for Clara)
| Paul E. WHITTEMORE
| b. 12 Jun 1878, Rutland Twp., Barry Co., MI
| Florence WHITTEMORE
| b. abt 1879
George's Mother (George's wife's name was also Hannah so it gets a little
confusing) was Hannah Odell, her Family Bible is at the Bernard Historical
Museum in Delton, Barry Co., Michigan. There are entries from her three
marriages (plus a list of her children in the marriages) in the Bible. Her
marriages: #1 Mac Hawley, #2 Asa WHITTEMORE, and #3 Obediah Hunt.
1850 Census, George and Hannah (Peterson) WHITTEMORE are in INDIANA,
COUNTY: ADAMS DIVISION: Saint Mary's Township REEL NO: 135 PAGE NO:
70B George and Hannah are listed on the same Census page with her PETERSON
kin.
1860 Census, Charleston Township, Kalamazoo County, MI lists George, Hannah
and 5 of their children. George is listed as a farmer.
1870 Census, Barry Township, Barry County, MI lists George, Hannah and 3 of
their children. George is listed as a well digger.
(end of "notes")
***************
There is also a James M. WHITTEMORE in the Barry Co. death records. He died
on Nov. 15, 1915 at 72 years, 9 months, 26 days, so born about 1843, his
father was John WHITTEMORE b. 1819/NY d. 1891, his mother was Elmira Colby.
James wife was Nancy. James and his father John were both in Rutland Twp.
in the 1870 Census.
I HAVE COPIES OF THE 1880 CENSUS PAGES for these two men/NOT
KNOWING HOW
THEY MAY FIT IN - were neighbors in Rutland Twp.
WHITTEMORE, JAMES AGE 37 FARMER, BORN PA
" NANCY, WIFE " 37 WIFE, KPING HOUSE, B. PA
" LOIS R., DAUG. " 13 AT HOME, B. PA
" VIRGINIA, DAUG. " 5 BORN MI
TAYLOR RHUBIN " 80 FATHER IN LAW, BORN NY
WHITTEMORE, JOHN E. AGE 61 FARMER, BORN NEW YORK
" CHLOE E. " 57 WIFE, KPING HOUSE, BORN NEW YORK
" COLBY, NANCY E. "23 NEICE, AT HOME, BORN PA
" LEWIS SMITH E. " 13? NEPHEW, FARM LABORER, BORN PA
BRURS-?, NATHANIEL "40 BOARDER, WORK IN SAW MILL, B. OHIO
From a Barry Co. plat map: James and Nancy lived on Chief Noonday
Road.
VERY FAMILIAR WITH THIS ROAD
Also John Whittemore who md. Lucy McNutt in Rutland Twp. on Oct. 11, 1877.
This John was born in Ashtabula Co., OHIO.
| Ira Johnson WHITTEMORE (s/o
Frank & Ruby WHITTEMORE)
| b. 23 Oct 1873, Ashtabula, Ohio (AS STATED ABOVE)
I do believe this John is the son of the above John &
Elmira(Colby) Whittemore.
Get this, they were married by O. B. WHITTEMORE, Minister of the Gospel.
WHOOOOOOOO is O.B. WHITTEMORE?!?!?!!?!?!
FRANKS WIFE, RUBY E. RAMSEY, BELONGED TO
GRACE EPISCOPAL CHURCH ON MADISON
SE IN GRAND RAPIDS. THE RECTOR WAS A "REV. LEWIS B. WHITTEMORE" (HIS WIFE
WAS HELEN C.) (per her obituary & GR City Directory)
I do think that possibly your Frank and the above James M. were brothers,
with their parents being John and Elmira (Colby) WHITTEMORE, possibly Elmira
died and John married a woman named Chloe as 1870 Census records show John
and Chloe A. Or possibly............????????
So the tie in for you and I has to come somewhere with my George's father
Asa WHITTEMORE and with possibly your Frank's father John, ifffffff John is
Frank's father??
I have 1880 Census record for your Frank and Ruby showing their 6 children,
some being born in Rutland Twp. 6th child being born in 1883. None of
their names are familiar.
MY COPIES OF 1880 CENSUS FOR FRANK & RUBY SHOW ONLY
THE FIRST FIVE CHILDREN,
THE 6TH CHILD, FLORENCE, IS NOT LISTED. HOW DO YOU KNOW FLORENCE WAS BORN
IN 1883?
I also think there is an OHIO connection as it keeps showing up in Census
records etc.
YES, 1880 CENSUS LISTS FRANK & RUBY'S 2ND & 3RD CHILDREN
BORN IN OHIO,
FIRST, FOURTH & FIFTH IN MI.
1870 CENSUS FOR VILLAGE OF HASTINGS SHOWS
WHITTEMORE, FRANK AGE 25, PUBLISHER OF HASTINGS BANNER, B.NY
" RUBY E. AGE 18, KPING HOUSE, B. NY-(b.p. is incorrect)
" (RUBY) MINERVA AGE 10/12 BORN LAST OCT.(1869) MI
BRECK LUTHER'S-? AGE 17 PRINTER APPRENTICE, BORN OHIO
FRANK'S NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR IS ALSO LISTED AS "PUBLISHER OF HASTINGS BANNER"
(HOLMES, Winslow age 27)
This is ASA WHITTEMORE, I do not have any information beyond him, nor do I
know who any of his siblings were. If I had more info on Asa, I think we
would possibly see a tie in with Frank's and James M's. parents. If this
following outline from my Family Tree Maker scrambles so that you are unable
to read it let me know and will try a different way to send.
THE NAME "ASA
WHITTEMORE" LOOKS SO FAMILIAR TO ME, BUT I CAN'T SEEM TO FIND
ANYTHING IN MY NOTES TO INDICATE THAT I TRUELY HAVE SEEN IT BEFORE. IT
JUST SEEMS LIKE I SAW IT WHILE RESEARCHING, COPIED THE INFORMATION, HOPING
TO FIND A CONNECTION LATER.

Many Blessings to you,

Again, there is no doubt that we are cousins. But where in these two lines
do we connect??
Lets stay in touch. I will do some internet research in Ohio. As you may
know by this time there are variations in the spelling of Whittemore. One
of my great or great great uncles was in the Civil War. When he came out
he was John Whitmore. The story is that he didn't know how to spell his
last name when he enlisted and left if up to those who were in charge of
him. :-) Maybe true and maybe not............
Thanks again Shelly!!!!
Let me know what your thoughts are about the above.
