I don't know if there's a connection, but my ggg-grandfather Thomas Chambers married Anne Irvine somewhere in Ireland (don't know location but was told by family that it was Dublin or Dublin County - no evidence) - their son John (born somewhere between 1842-46) was my gg-grandfather and was married to Jessie Halcrow in Edinburgh in 1880. lET ME know if we connect.

I have an ancestor, William Chambers, whom I am trying to find more about HIS ancestry. This is some of what I know:
He was born 1807-1818 in probably KY, NC or Tenn (he answered differently on the 3 censuses he particpated in). He married Matilda Justice in 1836 in Putnam, Indiana. He appears in the 1840 census of Putnam, Indiana. By 1850, he is in Crawford, Missouri, 1860 - Maries, Missouri, and 1870- Phelps, Missouri (all of the above areas are in the same general location). He died in August, 1871. He remarried about 1858 to Elvira Clara Ridenhour. Some of his children include: George W. Chambers, Eliza Ann (married Sellers), Mary Ellen (married Tune), Melvina, Jane, John Henry (married Rachel Watson), James (m. Minerva Hood), Caroline, Emeline, Margaret, Matilda, Hester, Susan (married Joseph Sharp), William T. I have a lot of information regarding the children including marriages & such. However, I haven't been able to determine any parentage.
William does appear on the 1840 census next to William Chambers, Sr. (probably his father), and James Chambers. Close to them in that census is Elijah Sutherlin who married Margaret Chambers in 1835 in Putnam, Indiana also. I find Elijah Sutherlin & family in 1850 Fannin, Texas census. Close by in the 1850 Fannin, Texas census is James Chambers, 2nd wife Mary (Smith is name from 1st marriage), Andy Chambers, more Chambers kids, & some Smith kids. I believe that this Andrew Chambers is the one that appears next to William Chambers in the 1870 census of Phelps, Missouri (Andrew married Susan E. Joice - I can't find him in 1860 census).
I have other clues & leads but still nothing definite. If anyone has any info. I would appreciate it.

Am looking for the daughter of Martha India Pitman Chambers. She was listed as living with her grandfather Mitchell Monroe Pitman in the 1900 Census as Nora Pitman (her mother was also listed as a Pitman and was shown as widowed); Nora's age was 6 and in the 1910 Census she was listed as Minora (Sp ?) Pitman age 16; and in the 1920 Census as Nora C Pittman Age ?). In all of these Cenus records she was living with her grandfather.
Would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have some info on Nora - am trying to update the Pitman Family History Book. Nora's mother was my grandfather (John Patterson Pitman) sister. Know that her grandfather died Jan 1923 and her grandmother Minerva J. Pitman died in 1927.

The 1880 census show them living in Lafferty Creek, Izard Co. Arkansas. I believed they lived there until about 1910. Not sure. Another place mentioned was Drywall. I know my grandmother and possibly here sisters were born in Lafferty Creek. The 1880 census shows him married to Margaret F. I am assuming her maiden name was Witt, because her mother, Martha Witt lived with them. The 1900 census (Lafferty Creek) show him married to a Mary Ann. James and Mary Ann had about 7 children. My grandmother Willie D. and sisters Ovella, Rebecca and Minnie came from his marriage to Margaret.

What year was Jane Chambers born? Did she emigrate from Northern Ireland? My great, great grandfather was James Chambers born 1808 and emigrated from N. Ireland probably around the early 1830's. He was married in Hamilton in 1833; lived Dundas, Wentworth County and then to Guelp Township, Wellington County. I have been looking for siblings and wondered if your Jane Chambers could be a sister.

JOHN CHAMBERS was born about 1645 presumably in Lanark, Scotland. He married
Marion Crockonrig who was born about 1649. They resided in Piscataway
Township, Middlesex County, NJ. Their children were John Jr., William, who
married Sarah Webster, and James, who died about 1748.
JOHN CHAMBERS JR, son of John and Marion, was born about 1675-80, possibly in
Lanark, Scotland. He died before 1760 in Windsor Township, Middlesex County,
NJ. He was the constable for Piscataway in 1712, and a soldier in Colonel

Presbyterian Church of Allentown, NJ from 1744 to 1759/60. His wife's name is

original land was purchased in Hamilton Square, NJ (Don Chambers).
Children of Robert and Elizabeth were: John, William, David (m. Rachel
Stille), Elizabeth (married Matthias Mount), Mary (m. John Lewis) and Captain
Robert (1758-1813 m. Francina Reeder).

WILLIAM CHAMBERS, son of Robert and Elizabeth, was born on June 19, 1753. He
was a Revolutionary War Soldier from July to early October of 1777. He
resigned his commission on October 10, 1777. (US Service File) He was a

(Above from D.E. Chambers and from S.A.R. application of Arthur Woodburne
Chambers.)
RALPH CHAMBERS, son of William and Rachel, was born on October 8, 1787. He
married Ann Hullfish probably on April 20, 1818. She was born on August 26,
1788 and died in 1875. At least by 1819 they lived in New Jersey, probably
near Trenton in Monmouth or Ocean County. The family was a seafaring family
among a community of seafaring families including the Rulons and the Sopers.
According to Corinne Lill at the Ocean County Historical Society, "Most men
in the area were mariners, baymen or sea Captains. Taking a coal barge from
here to NY made you a Captain. Some went to Virginia and points farther."
There is a Chambers Bridge Road in Bricktown, about ten miles north of Toms
River, there is a Chambersburg in Trenton and there is a Chambers Corners, on
route 206, south of Trenton.
Ralph and Ann had sons, Elias H. (1819), John Tilton (1827) and Charles H.
(1829).
Captain John Tilton Chambers (b. 1827) married Saretta E. Rulon on Nov. 22,
1854. Both families were well-known seafaring families. John T. and Saretta
had a son, Frank M.
Frank M. Chambers, son of Captain John T. was also a boatman. He was born on
August 15, 1855 in New Jersey. He married Rose L. Maynard of Allyn's Point,
CT, and had children: Effie, Bertha and John. Frank died on March 12, 1910 in
Toms River. He was Sherriff from 1893-1896. An article about him from NJ
Courier March 17, 1910 tells about his family connections.
Captain Charles H. Chambers (b. 1829) married Roxanna Rulon on September 2,
1855.
CAPTAIN ELIAS HULLFISH CHAMBERS, SR, son of Ralph and Ann, was born near
Trenton on January 28, 1819. On January 15, 1845, at the age of 26, he
married Mary Ann Soper (Grant17).
Mary Ann was born February 16, 1822 in Waretown, NJ, the daughter of Charles
Soper and Amy Warren of Waretown who were married October 27, 1821. (see
SOPER).
They lived at one time in Toms River, Ocean County, New Jersey. In 1850 they
lived in Union Township. Mary Ann died on February 19, 1881 at the age of
59. Mary Ann is buried in Waretown with Elias Hullfish Chambers, Sr.
Elias Hullfish Chambers married second on October 25, 1883 to Miriam Cox of
244 Fourth St., Jersey City, New Jersey, at her home. (It was also the home
of witness, Mrs. Edward Soper). Miriam was the daughter of Timothy Cox and
Elizabeth Seaman. He was 64 and she was 44. It was his second marriage and
her first. His residence at this time was Waretown, and his occupation was
Sea Captain. His parents are listed as Ralph Chambers and Ann Hullfish.
(Source: Marriage Record, NJVR).
Elias died on November 23, 1896 at the age of 78 in Barnegat, NJ. He had been
ill for two weeks with Malaria. The death record lists his parents as Ralph
and Ann. (NJVR Death Certificate # C84)). The inventory of his will lists a
widow, "Miriam". He was buried in Waretown.
Children of Elias Hullfish Chambers and Mary Ann Soper:
1) Charles S., born in 1847, m. Armenia Williams
2) Mary Ann, born 1848, died 1932, m. Rev. Samuel H. Potter.

1877.
4) Elias Hullfish, Jr., born June 1851.
5) Abigail L., born about 1854, married Edward James Irons (administrator of
her father's estate) on December 24, 1880.
(above from Grant 17)
1850 census of Union Township, Ocean County, NJ shows family of Elias H.
Chambers age 31, Mary A., age 28, Charles, age 3, Mary and Eliza (twins, age
1).
This census also shows John Chambers, age 23, boatman and Charles Chambers,
Age 27, boatman.
The 1860 census of Waretown, Ocean County, NJ shows family of Elias H.
Chambers, age 41, mariner, wife, Mary, age 37, Charles S., age 13, Mary C.
and Eliza, twins, age 11, Elias, age 8 and Abigail L., age 6.
It is believed that Elias Hullfish Chambers served the Union Army during the
Civil War, and was part of the blockade of the Atlantic Coast in Chesapeake
Bay, known as "The Anaconda Plan". The headquarters for the blockade was
Fort Monroe, a massive stone fortress at Hampton Roads, Virginia, where the
James River poured into the Chesapeake Bay. The Federal Camp was at Newport
News. By the end of the Civil War, the US Navy maintained a force of over 600
ships.
The family history says that Elias Hullfish Chambers was captain of a
4-masted schooner. This may have been Elias Jr.
ELIAS HULLFISH CHAMBERS, JR., son of Elias and Mary Ann Soper, was born on
June 6, 1851, Waretown, NJ. He married Maria Louisa Camburn (Marie Louise
Camberne, on application for S.A.R.)of Hackensack, NJ, on February 16, 1881
(Three days before his mother died). He was 29 and she was 27. His
occupation was "seaman" and hers was "clerk". It was the first marriage for
both. (NJVR. Marriage Return)
Maria was born on November 13, 1853, daughter of Anthony Camburn (Cambern)
and Hannah Lippincott. (The marriage record spells the name Cambern. The
Soper genealogy spells it Camburn).
Elias and Maria had three children: Arthur Woodburne, Rufus Edwards and
Matilda.
Rufus Edwards (called Ed) Chambers married Alice and had two daughters, Mary
and Louise.
Matilda, called Mattie, married Brooks Cole and had six children: Delsie,
Madison, Arthur, Evelyn, Wallace, and one other (possibly Martha).
This Elias Hullfish Chambers removed to New Haven, CT where he died on
November 16, 1919. (Grant 17). Maria died in May of 1948 at the age of 95.
ARTHUR WOODBURNE CHAMBERS was born on December 8 of 1886 (per US SSI Death
Index. SS # 047-14-4773) in Tom's River, Ocean County, New Jersey. He
graduated from Yale law school in 1909. He married Winifred Langdale Smith,
daughter of George Phelps Smith and Harriet Langdale, about 1920. Winifred
died of a ruptured appendix. Arthur died in January of 1977, at the age of
90, probably in New Haven, CT. Arthur and Winifred had three sons, Arthur
Jr., Gordon and Marshall.
Arthur Woodburn Chambers, Jr., born on November 26, 1917, married Margaret
Unknown. He died in 1996. They had two daughters, Winifred Hale Chambers
and Margaret "Meg" Chambers. Arthur Jr. died of cancer of the bladder perhaps
in 1996.
Marshall Hale Chambers, born January 6, 1925, married Virginia Unknown. He
died in 1999 of pancreatic cancer. Marshall and Virginia had two sons,
Marshall Hale Chambers, Jr. and Samuel Phelps Chambers.
GORDON PHELPS CHAMBERS was born on August 7, 1921, in New Haven, CT. He
married Marian Louise Littlejohn, daughter of Samuel Leonard Littlejohn and
Marion Ella Cowles, about 1950. They had three children: (not listed to
protect the living)
Marian died on October 1, 1971 in New Haven, CT of ovarian cancer.
Gordon married second to Oonagh Ossrah Robinson born May 27, 1927 in England.
She was the daughter of Edgar Monteagle Browne and Osra Hinshelwood.
Gordon died on November 4, 1986 in Hamden, New Haven, CT of colon cancer.
