Hello Fellow Searchers,
I am researching the CHAMBERS line in Missouri. Currently I am caught
up in the Civil War period. I have looked thru several 1860 & 1870 Missouri
Census, and have noticed that alot of the male members don't show from one
census to the other. That is the reason for my focus during this time
frame, to hopefully figure out what happened to them. I am hoping to find
out not only their military service, but to determine if they had been
killed, or died of disease, or that after the war, they moved on to
different locations as the country started to expand again.
What follows here, comes from the Missouri Records Center, Jefferson
City, Mo. All units listed for these men were Missouri units. Also, there
were no dates, other than military documentation, of when these records were
filed. I have found a few "positives", and several more "probables", and
the rest are, well, the rest are just "there". These names came from a type
of "master list", and just gives a basis on their military history. Once
the name is found, you have to go to a different file, and there are many,
many files, broken down to different units, and start the process all over
again. So, here goes, folks, all are CHAMBERS:

Hi Eileen and Greg,
Read your letters re the CHAMBERS family.
I know I have some CHAMBERS connections in the USA, but where?
My father, GEORGE OAKLEY CHAMBERS,(b.1904), came from TULLYLISH townland,
near BANBRIDGE, Co. DOWN. My grandfather DAVID, (b.c1866), and
greatgrandfather GEORGE,(b.1824?), also came from the same area. However,
my gtgtgrandfather ARCHIBALD JAMES CHAMBERS (b.1799), is reputed to have
come from Scotland to avoid religious persecution.
Does this ring any bells. anyone?
Regards,
DAVID ARMSTRONG CHAMBERS (Newtownards, Co. Down.)

Hello Chambers list members!
I just found this list and this is my first posting. I am hoping someone on the list has Chambers family that lived in Illinois in the Clark, Coles Counties and surrounding areas!
I am trying to find information on my great grandmother. I have a copy of her and great grandfather's marriage application. Anna Chambers married Sylvester Cox 6 August 1894 in Coles Co., IL. Further information on their marriage application tells me that on Anna's next birthday she would be 21 years old. Joseph Chambers is listed as her father. It also states that this was the 2nd marriage for both Anna & Sylvester. I do not have any information about the prior marriages of either. Family rumor has it that there are some half brothers/sisters.
I recently heard that Anna's middle name might have been Josephine.
Both great grandparents, Anna & Sylvester have been difficult to find information on. Apparently both died while their children (those that I know of) were quite young. Their daughter, Dona B. Cox born in 1896 in Edgar Co., IL and my grandfather, Joseph O. Cox born in Clark Co., IL 25 March 1897.
I believe we have found Sylvester's grave in Clark Co., IL. He died 14 April 1904 (at age 42 yr.. & 5mo.) . Which would have made my grandfather abt. 7 years old at the time. The plot Sylvester is buried in was purchased by Charles Chambers. Charles W. Chambers (died 28 Nov. 1891 (at the age of 20 yr.., 2mo., and 22 days) is buried there as well. The surname Tinch is also connected but have yet to sort it all out. There are Tinch burials there right with my great grandfather Sylvester and the Chambers mentioned above.
I sure hope there is some one who can help me. Any information and or tips appreciated!
Peggy
I'd be interested in knowing how many people are going to the Chambers family
reunion in Glen Eden Kentucky this weekend.

Hello David!
We're pleased to have you join in the hunt--particularly since you are
physically closer to the roots of the tree.
Speaking only for myself, I have no knowledge of the names you mention.
I'm curious as to the type of religious persecution your gg-grandfather
Archibald came under. Do you know?
My line appears to be from the Clan Chambers, a Sept of Clan Cameron of
Lochiel. In 1743, when my ggggg-grandfather David (b. 1725 Scotland)
sailed to America, Bonnie Prince Charlie was planning a return to Scotland
from exile in France. I have suggested the possibility that my
ggggg-grandfather was sent to America by his father to escape the fighting
that was to come with the English. If he sailed from Ireland, as tradition
suggests, I suspect he left following some time spent with the Irish branch
of the family.
I should also note that David's uncle had come to America several years
before 1743. He settled in Trenton, New Jersey. There appears to be a
significant number of Chambers in that area.

Greg Chambers, Martinsville, Indiana

Hi Eileen,
Tradition in my line says that David Chambers (b. abt 1725 in Scotland)
came to the Port of Philadelphia in 1743. He supposedly left from an Irish
port. Scholarship has been vague about the Irish connection. Apparently
some of David's uncles (and perhaps other members of the family) moved back
and forth between Ireland and Scotland. There seems to have been strong
family ties in both countries. I am not aware of anyone currently able to
successfully going back beyond David and his brothers with solid facts. We
know the names of Alexander, Reynolds, Robert, etc., but other details have
been elusive. Needless to say, if you can put an Irish label on some of our
Scots, we would love to share with you!

Hi Don,
Wow...to be a double-dipped Chambers! Life just couldn't be any better
than that. Your father is from the Thomas/Jane West Owens line and your
mother from the Thomas/Lakey Lawson line. Good to hear from you!
My direct line is as follows:
Thomas Chambers=Lakey (Katy) Lawson
John Chambers = Margaret Sharp
Francis Marion Chambers = Lucinda Lay
Thomas Isham Chambers, Sr.= Ella Catherine Baird
Lee Roy Chambers = Garnet Elaine Spaninger
(me) Gregory Lee Chambers = Barbara Jeanne Sweet
(brother) Kenneth Wayne Chambers = Nancy Corrine Shawver
You are related to Sheila Strunk (sheilastrunk(a)compuserve.com)
who has contributed a great deal to the family search. Nice lady!
If you don't know her, send her an e-mail!
I'm not sure where you found me on the internet. I've got a lot of
lines "baited" in the genealogy pond. There are three that I can recommend
to you. First, because you're a Scott County, TN Chambers
make chambers(a)egroups.com a priority site for yourself. Brenda Strobel also
has a site built around the family at members.xoom.com/b_strobel. In
addition, Ron Riley has a site on the rootsweb Chambers-L(a)rootsweb.com that
covers more than just the Scott Co. family.
As to the names of David Chambers and his son William's wives, no one
has discovered them to date.
Best regards! Let's keep in touch either directly or through one of the
groups I've listed.
Greg Chambers
