Hi:
I thought all along that in my Chambers line there were no Civil War
veterans but today I discovered I might be wrong.
My great-grandfather Jeremiah Chambers and his father Jackson
Chambers were both located in Schuyler County, MO and more specifically
in the Glenwood area before and during and after the Civil War. During
this time one family group moved up to Numa, IA to escape Bushwhackers
that threatened their lives and their cattle. I always thought it was
Jeremiah that went north now I have been told that it could have been
Jackson but this I strongly question.
On my gggrandfather's grave site (Jackson) is a metal marker by a
historical society denoting service in a war. It is inscribed with
1861-1865 and a flag is also on the grave. I understand that there were
various methods in determining veterans. In this case, There was a
register signed at the Glenwood Reunion in 1906.
There are some problems about this:
1. Jackson would have been 46 at the start of the Civil War. Isn't that
a little old for service at that time?
2. The name listed on the register is "J.Chambers F company, 86 of
Missouri".
Is there any place or anyone that I can find to determine Just who
the J. Chambers was i.e. Jeremiah or Jackson? Are there any such
clarifying records available?
3. Jackson died in 1902 in Schuyler County. He would have had a little
trouble signing the register in 1906.
4. Jeremiah could have put the information on the register for his
father.
5. Could it have been Jeremiah? Was he in the war or in Iowa during the
war?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!
Next question:
1. William, Son of Edmund, has been challenged over the years by a few
people as the Father of Jackson who was born in 1815 in Bledsoe County,
TN (various records give Eastern Tennessee). Is there any way to
determine if any records have survived that could give this information
in Bledsoe County, TN?
2. Jackson's Mother, Rachel Stover Chambers, (In our records) was
married to William (born 1770 in NC) (died in Bledsoe County, TN 1815).
They had several Children. Rachel is listed as the mother and she later
married William Morrow.
a. Are there any people whose ancestry includes Rachel Stover
Chambers have any proof such as a bible record or a clipping or Obituary
showing that Rachel was married to William son of Edmund and buried in
Bledsoe County, TN?
These people would be:
Susan Chambers Hoots (Susan and Philip Hoots are buried in Bledsoe
County, TN)
Ruth Chambers Philips
Jeremiah Chambers of Georgia
Moses Chambers
We need proof of the marriage of Rachel to William to lay this to
rest.
I realize that these are a ton of questions but I thought I would
start the New Year with a bang!

Jerry, It was strange to be looking at my Chambers mail and seeing your note
re Greer. I have the Greers in my line but all I have re Elizabeth Greer was
that she was born in 1747. I'll look for more later this week when I have
time to "dig". Robin
There is an article being actioned on ebay.com that is about John Whiteclay
Chambers. He is not in my line of Chambers, but thought someone might be
interested. It is item #51715663
Melissa
The narative for the article is as follows. "Under Steam for the Gold
Rush", reprinted from the dairy of John Whiteclay Chambers from May, 1891,
when he boarad the Steamship Ruth at San Francisco to Nome, Alaska. Day by
Day experience to get to the beach sands at Nome were littered with gold
dust. Sailed under Captian Higgins bound for Golovin Bay. Ships mentioned
include the Conemaugh, Humboldt, Prosper, Catherine Suddon, the Portland via
Eureka, seattle, dutch Harbor, Nunivak and the Bering Sea. Relive this
great history as it was published after its discovery, in Volume XI, No 5 of
the American West Magazine
