I see from my research notes that C. David Chamberlin of Mt. Juliet, TN [Email:
Davidandpam(a)home.com}, which appears to be you, published queries in the Chamberlain
Chain, Vol. 24, p. 22, and Vol. 25, p. 18 [lineage in Chamberlain Chain Branch 244], and
in the WCGS newsletter, the Chamberlain Key, Vol. III, No. 2 and Vol. VI, No. 2 in 2001.
My records indicate you were an early member of the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society
and we corresponded by Email in Feb. 1998.
The information I've collected here for this family states that William Hayes
Chamberlin moved to the West Coast and fought in the Spanish American War, settled in
Holbrook, AZ, where he served in the State Legislature. William was in the Mercantile
business in Arizona according to one of David's uncles. My own checking, just now,
reveals the following two census entries:
- 1920 Census, Haslington? Ave., Holbrook Precinct, Holbrook Town, Navajo Co., AZ, p. ?,
#96/108, 8 Jan 1920, William H. Chamberlin, head, age 49, manager - wholesale house,
TN/PA/TN; Lela, wife, age 35, UT/UT/UT; Lela, daughter, age 13, NM/TN/UT; Lillian,
daughter, age 11, NM/TN/UT; Mamie, daughter, age 8, NM/TN/UT; also at #97/108, Lucy W?
----, sister, single, age 44, bookkeeper - wholesale house, TN/PA/TN
- 1930 Census, #206 West Grove, Prescott Justice Precinct, Prescott City, North-West Ward,
Institution: Mercy Hospital Incorporated, Yavapai Co., Arizona, p. 144B, #280/280, 17 Apr
1930, William H. Chamberlin, head, age 60, married age 32, rents, $58, wholesale grocer -
groceries, TN/PA/TN; Lilla I., wife, age 45, married age 17, UT/UT/UT; Lillian, daughter,
divorced, age 21, married age 17, stenographer - office, NM/TN/UT
Further, I see that you now call his father by the name of Col. William Hayes
Chamberlin, but his father was instead named Col. James Chamberlin (who married Adelaide
Stokes Nichol), an attorney [Harvard graduate] from Pennsylvania with a distinguished
military service record during the Civil War. James moved to Nashville in the autumn of
1863, and was appointed by Gov. Curtin as Military Agent of Pennsylvania for the
southwest, looking after the welfare of the Pennsylvania soldiers in that department until
the close of the war. He formed a law partnership with D. F. Wilkin, Esq., of Nashville,
TN. Data from the family group sheet for this family prepared by the late Chamberlain
genealogist, David Conrad Chamberlin, Sr., wherein James is identified as #LN1617 and his
son William Hayes as #LN1717, for your reference.
William Hayes Chamberlin was the 2nd of 10 children born in this family in Nashville,
TN, between 1868 and 1882. The ancestral line of descent is listed as: William Hayes(9),
Col. James(8), John(7), William(6), Lewis(5), John(4), Henry(3), John(2), Henry(1).
