Mrs. Sarah Peck, one of our oldest settlers, died at her residence in this city this
morning after a long
and painful illness. Deceased was born in Duchess county, N.Y. 83 years ago, and was
married there in 1840
to Levi B. Peck and that same year moved with her husband to Greenville, Michigan, where
Mr. Peck died in 1863.
After six years of widowhood, Mrs. Peck married a Mr. William Roach and they moved to
Rochester this state.
A year later they came to this county, locating on the Minnesota. A year of so after
locating here,
Roach, who was a dissolute character, deserted his wife and she learned years after,
located in Montana. Roach
had a brother who represented a western state in the national senate. Seven years ago
deceased took up her
residence in this city where she has since resided. Mrs. Peck was one of the first school
teachers in Brown
County and all her life has been regarded and unusually strong mentally, and always
interested in educational matters.
She has been an invalid for many years and her last illness was of nine weeks duration. To
mourn her loss
are a large circle of acquaintances and a numerous family of children and grand children.
She was the mother of John Peck
of Greenville, Mich., Chas W Peck, of Redwood Falls, Minn. Geo. Peck of the town of Home
and Mrs. N. Degneau of this
city, all of whom have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement. At Mrs.
Peck's request Rev. W. H. Knowlton,
now of Estherville, Iowa, has been asked to officiate at the obsequies which will be held
at All Souls church
on Saturday morning if the arrangements can be perfected to that end, but up to the hour
of our going to press the matter
has not been definately determined.
