John Chamberlin, born 24 May 1773, NJ, d. 26 Dec 1807, probably at Franklin Twp., Warren
Co., OH, was married to Nancy Tapscott, b. 23 Apr 1778, NJ, d. 27 June 1821, prob.
Franklin Twp., Warren Co., OH, with two known children listed for them - James, b. 30 Jan
1798, d. 28 Jun 1884, whose wife was Mary Ann Cox; and Mary, b. 8 Nov 1801, d. 27 Sep
1850, whose husband was Kenneth Anderson. All of these individuals are buried, together
with other family members, in the Tapscott Burying Ground at the Tapscott Primitive
Baptist Church, Franklin Twp., Warren Co., OH. Since John D. & Lucy Chamberlin are
also buried there, this is a good reason to suppose that she is likely their daughter, as
you have surmised. Nancy's second husband was Joseph Compton, by the way, but she is
buried with her first husband.
Early marriage records also list these persons and some others:
Warren County Genealogical Society, Warren Co., OH, Marriage Records Main Page, Index,
Marriages, 1803-1834 (other dates also available):
- Brides:
- Grooms:
So, you are quite right to believe that Lucy was the probably the daughter of John
& Nancy, for these reasons - in the Chamberlain lineage records that I maintain here,
I've tentatively made this connection, though absolute proof is lacking. John
Chamberlin's ancestral line of descent is listed as: (Joseph(6), John(5), John(4),
Henry(3), John(2), Henry(1) Chamberlin, b. c1595 - the oldest of the five original
Chamberlain/lin immigrant ancestors in New England, whose origins in England remain
unknown.
Since John's father, Joseph(6) was married 1769 in Middlesex Co., NJ, and his
will was dated May 25, 1789 in Windsor Twp., Middlesex Co., NJ (which named his son John
as his executor), it is safe to assume that John(7) was born there in Middlesex Co., NJ,
probably in Windsor. Joseph may have been married twice - the records are confusing in
this regard. Anyway, another of his sons was Joseph Chamberlin, Jr., born 28 Oct 1778
(wife Susan Jones), who had remained in New Jersey, but who had 12 children, 4 of whom
migrated to Warren Co., OH, with numerous descendants there that you will see in census
and other records there. Since Joseph Jr. was married, 20 Nov 1805, and had a daughter
Betsey, born 4 Oct 1806, he is thus eliminated as a possible father of your Lucy.
