Philip J. Chamberlain, Email: pjc271828(a)att.net, of the World Chamberlain Genealogical
Society [I was one of the cofounders of this organization], coordinates DNA testing for
all Chamberlains, using, ordinarily, the Family Tree DNA company (which you can read about
online) to conduct the test and report results. The usual test, for any male descendant
who still carries the Chamberlain surname, is called the Y-DNA test - the genetic material
in the male Y chromosome is passed on down from generation to generation, from father to
son to son, relatively unchanged. Each Chamberlain test result is matched, if possible,
with persons who share similar DNA - there are about two dozen different Ch'n groups
who are completely unrelated to each other, you will find. We expect that descendants of
Beekman and Malancton Chamberlin will fall within one of these groups. In your case
(I'm assuming you are a male), since Beekman Chamberlin is an ancestor on your
mother's side, you would N!
OT be tracing your Chamberlin line - only the ancestral line of your father, on back in
his own line. A more recent test, also administered by the FTDNA company, is called
"Family Finder" - it traces both male and female lines - useful to identify
cousins within the last 4-5 generations or so. Philip's article entitled "Recent
Advances in DNA Testing" in the recent issue of the Chamberlain Key, Vo. XVII, No. 2,
the newsletter of the WCGS, explains both types of tests and how they are interpreted and
used, in language which can be understood by any lay person. Please contact Philip if you
need help and advice with this matter. James B. Parker, Email: jbparker(a)provide.net.
