Your posting provides direction to access considerable census information for this family,
including the proof that John T. is the brother of Virginia, hence the son of Jonathan J.
Chamberland and his wife Martha/Martthey (-?-). I'm very pleased to see this new and
revealing information, and have updated my records for this family accordingly. Good for
you! Regarding Jonathan's identity, the 1880 census says he was 32, born TN, parents
birth place unknown; the 1900 census lists his age as 49, b. April 1851, birthplace TN,
parents both born France; and the 1910 census lists his age as 53, birth place LA, parents
birth places unknown. I have no way of knowing which is correct, but the following census
data match well, and perhaps pertain:
- 1860 Census, New Orleans Ward 8, Orleans Parish, LA, J. Chemilin, p. 575, #1966/2942, 30
Jul 1860, age 32, clerk, b. FRA? [looks like H. Rhin Fl]; John, age 8, attends school, b.
New Orleans, LA; Mary, age 5, b. New Orleans, LA; also J. Delen Jr., male, age 42, b. New
Orleans; Leraphin? Gallin or Gallier, female, age 80, b. Italy?; another family also
listed at this address, headed by L. Aupe, age 33, b. Leine or Seine?, France or
Florence?
For whatever it is worth, Jonathan's sons Henry Harrison Chamberlain and John T.
Chamberland both in 1920 listed their father's birth place as France, but Virginia
lists his birthplace as Missouri.
It would be helpful if someone could locate a death record for Jonathan (about
1954, Oregon), and an 1870 census listing for him. It would also be appropriate to obtain
a DNA test from a living male descendant carrying the surname of Chamberland or
Chamberlain, if this has not already been done, for comparison with other families within
the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society DNA study. Please contact me via Email, if you
wish, to discuss this information.
