Maggie,
I am trying to find a family of Chamberlains that I think are from the NY/PA border area.
Margaret A. Chamberlain married Jere B. Ryan (b. 1839, PA). In the 1850 census Jere is 11
yrs and lives in Athensboro, Bradford Co., PA. Jere had family across the state line in
Chemung and Tioga Cos., NY. This is in the western part of both states.
They had a son, Edward in 1859 in Port Jervis, Orange Co., NYjust across the river from
Matamoras, Pike Co. PA. This is the easternmost point of contact between the two states.
Most of the border between NY & PA is a surveyed border and as early as your Mary was
born, I'll bet people didn't pay much attention to it. The eastern section of the
border does have the Delaware River and there are hills ("the neverending
hills") around Binghamton but I think the terain flattens out once you get farther
west. Check out Joyce Tice's Tri-counties website, You can find it in the County
pages at Roostweb. She covers Tioga and Bradford Counties in PA and Chemung Co. in NY.
(There is a Tioga Co., NY nearby as well but she doesn't have that one) I've only
done a little chamberlain searching there so I can't say how much is there but this is
a GREAT SITE!!!
I know that Jere's parents were from Ireland and that they were mainly railroad
workers but i know NOTHING of Margaret's family except that they were not Cathlic
because Jere left the church for her.
Good luck,
Margaret A. (but that's from the other side of the family)
Does anyone on the list know who this lady was married to before John
Hancock, and what her maiden name might have been?
I am trying to determine if this is the marriage record for a John Hancoc=
k
and a Mary Frances Shaen/Shane/Shean/ or maybe even Sheehan (or something
like that, every record seems to spell the last name differently). The 1=
870
census lists Mary=92s place of birth as NY, but death records for two of =
the
children recorded the mother=92s birthplace as Penn. so I don=92t know ex=
actly
where she was from.
Any help on this one would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Maggie Hall
