I have been trying for some 30 years to
find the parents of Amelia. Following
is the result of some research I have
done trying to find them - and it is
not condusive to finding true facts:
Amelia Sarah Chamberlain b Nov 7, 1857
(one reference says Huntsville, Green Twp,
Sussex Co)
d. Sept 2, 1949 buried Newton Cemetery,
Newton NJ.
Notice in NJ Herald and Sussex Co Democrat
announces her marriage on September 20,
1879 to George Elmer SLAGHT.
He of Newton and she of Andover (she is married
as Millie CHAMBERLAIN). They married in Lafayette
at the M E Parsonage by REv. W. H. HAGGERTY.
In an interview with Amelia's daughter in 1980
I was told Amelia's mother was Sarah FLATT
CHAMBELAIN.
Amelia's death certificate shows the informant was
her son Albert and the only names for parents given was
her mother was ____ CHAMBERLAIN and he did
not know the father.
I do know that this Amelia is not the daughter of
Johnson CHAMBERLAIN. (I have found several
Amelia CHAMBELAINs roughly the same age).
Some possiblilies:
1860 Census, Byram Township, NJ p 671
CHAMBELAIN, Delia 38
Amelia 4
James (his age looked like either 3 or 5 months)
1870 Census Green Twp, Sussex Co
DENEE (?), Jacob 70
Delila 54
CHAMBERLAIN, Milla 14
James 12
From the book "Descendant of Benjamin Chamberlain"
page 40, the information that Hiram CHAMBERLAIN
married Delia Ann FLATT and had Mahlon andCynthia.
It goes on to say he married 2nd Mary KIMBALL. He
was a bloomer in his farther's forge at Russia but afterwards
kept a hotel at Carbondale Pa and died there. Their children
Elizabeth, Adelaide, Phrona.
1850 Census , Sparta, Sussex County
CHAMBERLAIN, Hiram 30 Bloomer
Delia Ann 29
Mahlon 7
Liltha 6
Absolem 3
Mary 2
Can anyone make sense of this? If you know that any
of these people are definitely NOT of the family
of "my" Amelia, please let me know.
I cannot find Hiram CHAMBERLAIN after the 1850
census.
