I wonder if anyone can confirm or deny that a man who married a distant
grand aunt might be Jacob Randall Chamberlain of Connecticut.
1. 1840 Census of Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut has a Jacob R.
CHAMBERLAIN with 1 male and 1 female 30-39 and 1 female under 5, and 1
female 5-10.
2. 1850 Census of Talmadge, Summit County, Ohio has J. R. CHAMBERLIN, 40,
Merchant, born Connecticut. He has a wife, Martha, and 4 children, all
born in Connecticut.
3. 1860 Census of of Cuyahoga Falls, Summit County, Ohio has J. R.
CHAMBERLIN, 50, enginier (sic), born Connecticut. Martha and 4 children are
listed and all born Connecticut.
4. 1870 Census of Hempfield, Mercer County, Pennsylvania has J, R.
CHAMBERLIN, 59, Engineer, born Connecticut. Wife is now Rachel, 43, born
Pennsylvania. My gg grand aunt, Rachel CRAIG, was married in Mercer County,
Pennsylvania, 27 September 1868. I don't know if this is the same J. R. or
what happened to Martha and the children.
5. 1880 Census of Geneva, Fillmore County, Nebraska has J. R.
CHAMBERLAIN, 70, Farmer, born Connecticut. Rachel is 53, born Pennsylvania. Several
of Rachel's relatives, including her mother, Elizabeth HASTINGS (married
CRAIG), moved to Geneva. We have not as yet located death records for J. R.
or Rachel.
There are no other J. R. or Jacob or whatever CHAMBERLIN or CHAMBERLAIN
who fit the age and birthplace that I have found. Occupations change, but
that is not so uncommon an occurrence. I wonder if there are any CHAMBERLAIN
researchers who can give us information.
Thank you for your attention, and hopefully someone will be able to shed
light on this man.
