Hi John
I took your advice and sent for the marriage certificate of Thomas Chalmers and Helen
McLanders, and found the following:
Thomas and Helen were married at Dundee on 27th July, 1891. Thomas's parents were
listed as James Chalmers (a Journeyman Mason) and Jessie Chalmers (maiden surname Bisset)
of 2, Ogilvies Road, Dundee. I checked these details against the 1881 census, and found
(living at 2, Ogilvies Road, Dundee):
James CHALMERS M 45 M Perth, Perth, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Mason (Foreman)
Janet CHALMERS M 45 F West Haven, Forfar, Scotland
Rel: Wife
James CHALMERS U 25 M West Haven, Forfar, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Stone Mason
William CHALMERS U 17 M Dundee, Forfar, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Clerk
Ellen CHALMERS U 15 F Dundee, Forfar, Scotland
Rel: Dau
Occ: Machinist
Thomas CHALMERS 12 M Dundee, Forfar, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Scholar
Mary CHALMERS 8 F Dundee, Forfar, Scotland
Rel: Dau
Occ: Scholar
I don't know why James's wife should seemingly be known by two names - Jessie and
Janet - but I found what seems to be their marriage via the IGIs, which states that James
Chalmers and Janet Bisset were married at Monifieth, Angus, on 20th February, 1861.
Beyond this, I'm stumped, I'm afraid, and can only hope SKS recognizes some of the
names/dates and can perhaps help me to establish the parentage of James (who I calculate
to have been born around 1836).
Cheers,
Sue
