Thank you. Reading more in the aforementioned book - the Chalmers family bible is
mentioned. My great-great grandfather, Wm. Chalmers was born at Old What Farm near New
Deer Aberdeenshire Scotland in 1817. The bible was printed in 1610 and passed from father
to oldest son, takes the family history back two or more generations. The first entry says
that William Chalmers and Margaret Watson had six children born between 1779 and 1799 in
the Parish of Monquhitter. The church parish is located in Cuminestown, only three miles
from Old What.Alex Chalmers was their oldest son. He married Ann Mackie at "Upper Old
What" probably in 1812. They had six children between 1814 and 1825. The oldest son
was William, my great grandfather. In 1845 at 28 yrs. William married Catherine Metcalfe
at the Mains of Auchmunziel and took her to "Old What" three mi.away. They had
11 children bet. 1848 and 1869. The last child being born at Cornelia Farm died at a young
age.William Chalmers was a bree!
der of Short Horn Cattle and Clydsdale horses. His eldest son was Alexander my great
grandfather. The account you give from the Aberdeen Journal is correct in that Alexander
Milne was the Minister of The Tualatin Plains Presbyterian Church or The Old Scotch Church
(you can google it for a good history and Alexander Milne is discussed there). The
Chalmers were three of the twelve persons who founded the "Old Scotch Church" in
Oregon. The oldest daughter of William Chalmers (who moved to Oregon) was Helen DOB
8/27/1846 Mains of Old What. The timing seems right; however, it is confusing. It is the
same family being married in Oregon and then after Taylor's death Helen or Margaret
(may have been her middle name and she chose to use it rather than her given name)
returned to Scotland to marry Wm Stewart? The article is of my family it is simply
confusing to understand just how Margaret was Helen or vice versa?? In 1872, the Chalmers
would have been in Oregon for /- three years !
and Helen or Margaret would have been 26 years old. Thank you again.
