Hello Alexandra. I have been tracking a Margaret Chalmers for some time and today I made
a connection to your William Chalmers - I think?. In the Aberdeen Journal dtd. Wednesday
11 Dec, 1872 - "Marriage - Tyrie, William Taylor Esg. Merchant on the 2nd Ist. by the
Rev. Alexander Milne, Minister of the Parish, to eldest daughter of William Chalmers, late
of Old What, Aberdeenshire, now of Cornelia Farm, Oregon." William Taylor died
before 1875 and Margaret remarried William Stewart (Yet another William) on 30 Nov 1875
Tyrie, Pitsligo. William Stewart and Margaret continued to live and work as Merchants at
the William Taylor home and Shop loc 61 High Street. Tyrie. This information is
confirmed in the 1881 and 1891 Census. William Stewart and Margaret and children (Theirs
and hers) purchased and ran the Douglas Arms Hotel in Banchory Ternan, Kincardineshire
until at least Margarets' death in 1905. Her death certificate lists her father as
William Chalmers (reputed) and !
Jane (maided surname Smith) (later married to John Birnie)). Based on the Aberdeen
Journal news clip it would seem that "MY" Margaret Chalmers believed that her
father was indeed William Chalmers of Old What, and continued to know of his whereabouts
in 1872 i.e Cornelia Farm, Oregon. All this leads me to believe that there were two
Margarets attributed to William of Old What. Your thoughts? All the best.. db
