Hi Moira,
Hope you don't mind me adding my tuppence-worth (2 cents in some parts of the world).
I am unaware of another James Chalmers missionary - but the name Chalmers has been linked
with the church throughout the ages, so it is certainly possible. One of the great
supporters of John Knox was the 'noble' Chalmer(s) family of Gadgirth in Ayrshire,
and the name appears several times in 'Fasti Ecelesaticii Scoticanae' (excuse the
spelling!). Some of the Chalmers ministers made it to the New World, and if memory serves
me, they have some connection to the Chalmers silversmith family - who minted the first
silver coins in the USA. I do have some references to this amongst my Chalmers data -
somewhere ;)
I do not believe this Chalmers family were 'missionarys' but had ministry
connections.
Nice to see the name Moira (my daughters name!)
John
