Message Board Post:
I am researching my ancestor, Philemon Chalmers, who was born between 1780-90, probably in
Annapolis, Maryland but possibly in Baltimore. He fought in the war of 1812 as part of
the Maryland militia, married Catherine Flanagan in Baltimore in 1813 (Zion German
Lutheran church), and died in 1822. I believe he was a grocer. He left three orphan
children, Elizabeth, James, and Philemon.
I having trouble identifying Philemon the elder's parents. Based on circumstantial
evidence, I suspect he is related to the Chalmers who had been silversmiths in Annapolis,
but became rope makers and government functionaries in Baltimore. Examples of these would
be John Chalmers (died in 1817), James Chalmers (died in 1834), John Chalmers Jr (the
reverend), and James Chalmers Jr. However, I am having trouble locating any evidence
making a direct connection, or ruling one out, for that matter.
Has anyone run into this Philemon Chalmers?
