Seeking identities of George Chalmers and Margaret Balfour, married Oct
8 1743 in Markinch, Fife, Scotland. Was Margaret daughter of Peter
Balfour and Gills Smart or daughter of Thomas Balfour and Helen
Bowman?
Looking at the children of George C. and Margaret Balfour:
1. GEORGE CHAMBERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 06 APR 1744 Dysart, Fife, Scotland
2. Gills Chalmers - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 26 SEP 1747 Dysart, Fife, Scotland
3. GILES CHAMBERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 26 SEP 1747
4. GILES CHAMBERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 30 SEP 1747 Dysart, Fife, Scotland
5. THOMAS CHALMERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 24 MAY 1751
6. THOMAS CHALMERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 03 JUN 1751 Dysart, Fife, Scotland
7. DAVID CHAMBERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 18 MAR 1753
8. DAVID CHAMBERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 25 MAR 1753 Dysart, Fife, Scotland
9. JANET CHAMBERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 08 DEC 1745 Dysart, Fife, Scotland
10. JOHN CHALMERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 24 MAY 1756
11. JOHN CHALMERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 30 MAY 1756 Markinch, Fife, Scotland
12. ROBERT CHALMERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 11 JUN 1760
13. ROBERT CHALMERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 15 JUN 1760 Markinch, Fife, Scotland
- note the daughter GILES. So almost certainly Margaret was the
daughter of Peter BALFOUR and Gills SMART. (I suspect that was actually
pronounced GILLIS). I have never seen that name elsewhere, and it may
prove useful to in tracing out the SMART line.
I have a similar name - AYTON (female Christian name). The first I know
of was born in 1799 - and it is still in the family today.
Is George son of David Chalmers and Jane Barklay of Markinch? If so,
who are their parents?
From LDS:
GEORGE CHAMBERS
Male
Event(s):
Birth: 02 APR 1721
Christening: 09 APR 1721 Markinch, Fife, Scotland
Parents:
Father: DAVID CHAMBERS Family
Mother: JANET BARCLAY
It is QUITE LIKELY that the above is your George C. - BUT you will have
to dig deeper to be absolutely sure.
I can also to offer you - from the Fife FHS death Index CD:
763 CHAMBERS David 23
Markinch,Blawhidder OPR R OPR 447 so David Chambers
26 Mar 1813 760 0 grandmo Mgt Balfour - sp of
George Chambers - int 27 Jan 1805
So it seems David, son of George and Margaret BALFOUR in turn had a son
David who died aged 23 in 1813. Margaret BALFOUR died bef 27 Jan 1805.
Margaret is given in the same index as living at Balbirnie Mill and as a
widow of George - so George died before 1805. I cannot pinpoint husband
George's death in the index.
There's also another entry for Blawhidder:
765 CHALMERS David 82
Markinch,Blawhidder OPR R OPR 447 hu Janet Currer
26 Jun 1835 762 0 Wife int 16 Nov 1830
David C and Janet CURROR had the following children:
1. ISABLE CHALMERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 27 NOV 1792 Leslie, Fife, Scotland
2. GEORGE CHALMERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 22 MAR 1782 Leslie, Fife, Scotland
3. JOHN CHALMERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 16 JUN 1785 Leslie, Fife, Scotland
4. DAVID CHALMERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 16 JAN 1784
5. DAVID CHALMERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 25 JAN 1784 Leslie, Fife, Scotland
6. DAVID CHALMERS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 16 JUN 1789 Leslie, Fife, Scotland
- this last David, I guess, would be David who died in 1813 - although
the age is out by a year or so.
I can try to find Blawhidder for you if you are interested.
I think George and Margaret are parents of ancestor Thomas Chalmers
b.
May 24, 1751 who married Agnes Brown abt 1771 in Fife.
Yes (see above) - Thomas was their son.
Thomas and Agnes were parents of definite ancestor George Chalmers b.
May 5, 1774 who married Catherine Craig August 3, 1809 in Fife. Their
son George b. 1820 in Markinch married Catherine Hutchison in 1850 and
moved to Wallsend, NSW, Australia with their family. Descent continues
through John Chalmers who married Eliza Jane Drummond June 9 1876
in NSW.
To get any further back you are either going to have to visit Scotland
yourself to do some research OR hire a professional in Scotland. You
may be able to get films of Mortcloth records etc. for Markinch at your
local LDS centre.
I am at the same point with my own Chalmers line. I really need to
spend some time back home (Although I was born and educated in Scotland
I now live in Texas).
Try contacting the Fife FHS - a very active FHS. Someone local may be
able to help.

Join the SCT-FIFE rootsweb list - another active list - where now two
volunteers are busy photographing gravestones throughout Fife and
offering them (for free) to list members.
Check the SCT-FIFE archives at rootsweb. I can't remember whether
Markinch has been covered yet by the photographers.
Hope some of that is of some help!
