Hi Barb,
Nice to see some activity on the Chalmers list. We communicated some
time (must be years) back I remember. I see your name on the genealogy
newsgroups regularly.
I have made some considerable progress in the intervening time. I
originally believed all my CHALMERS line to have lived and worked in
Kinross and Fife, but have recently discovered many of them migrated to
Glasgow and Lanarkshire (Barony) in the mid 19th century - one these was
also a printer in 1881 (John Chalmers b. 1862) - but still see no
connection between our two lines unfortunately.
I have found a distant cousin in Plymouth, England. We have a mutual
gggg-grandfather Francis Chalmers b. 1751!
Most of my folks who migrated to Glasgow stayed in the building trade -
either as builders/plasterers - but mainly staying with the main family
trade of slaters. It looks almost at one time as though they had a near
monopoly of the trade around 1881 in central Scotland!
It's really great to see some activity on the list though!
SLAINTE!
John Chalmers
