The book I mentioned encompasses early Scottish history, too. The Picts and those North
Sea invaders - I believe that the Chalmers may have French origins (Chalmet). The family
story is that they came with Queen Mary's retinue as scribes when, upon her
husband's death, she returned to Scotland from France.
We are staunch American Scots - yes, Scottish history is very important to us as well. My
son's name is, Trent Alexander Stewart. True to the family background he is in the
cattle business in Oregon and active as such throughout the United States. We have
complete pedigree records of the Short Horn herd sold at Old What, New Deer prior to the
Chalmers departure. They brought their most prized stock inc. Clydsdales with them on
shipboard. Sadly, the horses did not make the crossing and the cattle were injured. Upon
arrival in New York, the Chalmers sold what was left of their prized cattle to a Canadian
breeder. They had to rebuild their herd in Oregon with Short Horn stock purchased from a
Mr. Ladd.
My grandfather Chalmers married Margaret Panton whose father, John Panton son of William
and Mary Panton, Elgin, Scotland settled here (Duluth, MN) in the late 19th c. His sister,
Margaret Panton Petrie, remained in Scotland close to her family home. I have placed posts
in Elgin for any information regarding the Panton family.
Hope this did not bore you. Thank you again for your courtesy forwarding the newspaper
article and your reply. Alexandra
