Hello Gareth
You posted your query in the year 2000 and I'm wondering if I'm a bit late to be
responding. However, I've only just made a start on tracing my Challis family.
My paternal grandmother was Nellie Marie CHALLIS born abt 1884 in Castle Camps, Cambridge.
Her parents were Frank CHALLIS (of Haverhill in Suffolk) and Mahala (of Castle Camps).
You were asking (back then) about Challis in Cambridge. Frank CHALLIS of course was from
Suffolk but since my Grandmother's family lived in Castle Camps for quite some time,
at least 14 years (it's where the 6 children were born) maybe there would be a
connection?
I note that in the 1881 Census, Frank (living in Haverhill and single) is Challis. In
1891, the family when living in Castle Camps, goes under the name of Challice. And in
1901, living in Haverhill by this time, they are back to Challis. Why the name change
(and back again), that would be one of life's little mysteries I expect.
Hope this interest is still current for you, in which case I would be pleased to hear back
from you.
Sincerely,
Pat
