In the 18th century one of the Challis family businesses seems to have been as Veterinary
Surgeons.
From the census I have three generations
1 Thomas Challis (1772-1851) - Veterinary Surgeon in 1841 and 1851 Census - White Notley,
Essex
2 Thomas Challis (1796-1851) - Veterinary Surgeon in 1841, 1851 - Kelveden Essex)
3a Thomas Walford Challis (1824 - Veterinary Surgeon in all census from 1841 - Witham,
Essex
3b Philip John Challis (1827 -1912) - sometimes a Veterinary surgeon in census, other
times pork butcher, labourer.
The RCVS says they were never registered with them and that pre-1881 anyone could call
them themselves a vet - apparently it was common for farriers and others who worked with
animals to do this
Does anyone have anything more these Challis's.
I am also interested if anyone has a view of where Thomas middle name of Walford was
introduced.
