Thanks Jan,
My father's greatgrandfather came from Suffolk area and I was aware of the various
spellings of Challis, such as Challice, Chalice etc. Thanks very much. There are very few
of us here in New South Wales Australia and we are all related in some way. My ancestor
John Henry Challis was a well known merchant and philanthropist and donated a huge sum to
University NSW and had Challis House named after him. We are very proud of him and his
marble bust is in foyer of the existing Challis House in the city. My father looks very
much like him. The monies invested in trust still fund scholarships for various
faculities at the University. He died in 1879 here in his seventies after arriving from
England around 20 years of age. We have no convicts on either side of our family and it
is the fashion to have them now! My ancestor on mothers side is first Spaniard to
settle in Sydney and to be granted land as a free settler. We have much documentation him
as he was unique. That is!
whole other story......wont bore you.
Thanks once again.
Christine Challis
