Hi all...am wondering if anyone can help.
I am trying to find information about a lady called Emily Violet Buchanan Challis...I have
a marriage certificate stating that she married a cousin of mine Archimedes William George
Joscelyn Connor in the Registry Office in Brentford on the 25 September 1912. Her age is
given as 28, she was a spinster and her father is listed as Arthur Challis (deceased).
Her address is given as 28 Mornington Crescent, London. (I think it says Mornington)
Witnesses are a C Helen and an E Reed.
Okay so the mystery is that I can find no record of a birth for someone with that name,
there are 3 Emily Challis's born in that time period but none of those middle names or
intials.
I can't find her father either anywhere. I did look for a marriage between a Challis
and a Buchannan thinking that maybe the Buchannan was her mother's maiden name but to
no avail.
The person she married was born in British India and came to the UK to practice as a
Barrister, he lived in Ranlegh Road, Ealing and spent his time between India and the UK.
Through 1914-1917 he served in the British army before leaving due to health reasons.
In 1924 he leaves the UK and returns to India with his mother. His wife however is not
with him. He gives his UK address as Castletown Terrace. I am trying to establish what
happened to her. He returned to the UK in 1933 but again there is no sign of Emily.
On the passenger lists he gives himself as single. He eventually dies in the UK in a
military nursing home in Brighton but gives his address as Castletown Terrace, London so
he had kept that address throughout his travels.
Can anyone find out who Emily was and what happened to her or does anyone have them in her
tree.
Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions will be welcomed. Regards, Claire
