Hello
I am helping a family friend trace his family roots and came across your
website. He is the Grandson of Samuel Clark who was born about 1894 in
Abertillery son of Thos (Thomas) & Phebe Clark.
At the time of the 1901 Census the family were living at Top Row 15
Cwmtillery, Abertillery, Monmouthshire. Thomas Occupation was Colly
Check Weigher.
Thomas & Phebe had the following other children that I know of. Rowland,
Edith, Lewis, Gertrude, Adeline, Horace (Lived in Green Street, Cowley,
Oxford) , Tom & Jack.
I believe Phebe could be Phebe Challingworth who is shown on the 1881
Census living with her Parents George & Martha Challingworth (born in
Wordsley, Stafford). George is shown as the Foundry Proprietor. They
were living at Foundry Cottages, Risca, Monmouthshire.
Thomas Clarks father was a Colliery Manager and it seems likely that the
foundry Proprietors daughter could have married a Colliery Managers son.
Best wishes
Thomas Peeke
