Andy, Marion,
Thought I'd join in on this one. Will be grateful if anyone can add to the
links.
Re Marion's 1856 reference:
Has anyone a corresponding 1851 census reference (I have none suitable)?
Just one 1841 census reference, Henry aged 12, son of John (45, Mason) and
Anne (45) at Church Lane, St Mary Redcliff.
1851 census shows John by now dead (see below) but Anne (54, born Bath) with
family (less Henry) still at 6 Church Lane, St Mary Redcliff.
Eldest daughter age 30 in 1851, so likely marriage is:
John Philpot Challenger = Anne Batchelor at Bath St James 01 Sep 1817.
John Philpot Challenger died Q4 1844 in Bristol RD (This was not the son of
John and Anne (see below *), so was presumably Anne's husband).
This in turn points to marriage 26 Sep 1792 at Bedminster of William
Challenger and Elizabeth Philpot.
* John W Challenger (29, Mason), with son John Charles (5), living at 24
Redcliff Hill on 1851 census.
As my own Challenger ancestors were in Bedminster around 1792 and family
names included William (though far from uncommon!) and trades by 1856
publican, I am interested.
Re Andy's family from 1881 census:
Henry Challenger age 29 in 1881 was possibly the Henry Challenger born
Bedminster RD in Q4 1851, which just might relate him to the above. However
the following certainly fits and prompts a search for a marriage reference
with Hartly as bride's surname. Can anyone help with this?
Henry Hartley Challenger married in Clifton RD Q2 1872.
Henry Hartly C Challenger born Barton Regis RD Q3 1877
Henry Hartley Challenger died 12 Sep 1890, bur Greenbank Cemetery, Bristol,
age 40 or 39 according to GRO / MI respectively
Henry Hartley Charles Challenger married Elsie Ellen, died 19 Dec 1947 at
Barton Hill, Bristol.

Marion,
The 1881 Census has this contender (with family), who is close by
date-of-birth,
and plausible by profession:-
