Apologies if answer to my query below has been posted in years gone by. We
all need refreshers from time to time!
Henry and Eliza Challenger married one another at Bath St Michael with Paul
in Q4 1850. I don't at the moment have the full details that the certificate
would provide. It seems quite likely that they were cousins or second
cousins. My query is: can anyone identify Eliza's parents and ancestral
line?
I have determined that Henry (born about 1828) was one of at least seven
children born to John Philpot(t) Challenger and Ann née Batchelor, who had
married on 01 Sep 1817 at Bath St James. John died 27 October 1844;
unfortunately only daughter Sarah is specifically identified his will, but
the other children are easily identifiable from censuses. (I can provide
details if anyone needs them).
John Philpot(t) Challenger, his wife Ann, his son Henry and Henry's own son
Henry (jnr) were involved in the masonry and building trades in Bristol
throughout much of the 19th century.
John Philpot(t) Challenger in turn was the son of William Challenger and
Elizabeth Philpot, married on 26 Dec 1792 at Bedminster St John. I do not
have positive identification of any other children born to this marriage so
would be interested also to learn of any further births / baptisms.
I am (still) trying to determine relationships (if any) between the
Challenger families living in Bedminster in the 1790s, thus the interest in
Eliza (born 1827/28), who is not currently accounted for in my Challenger
trees.

It seems I am now able to answer my own query of 19 Feb 2006. This stated

It turns out that the above Eliza (née Baker) was the widow of William
Lambell Challenger, whom she had married in Bristol in Q4 1844. William
Lambell Challenger (the first of at least two), like his own father, William
(who had married Ann Lambell on 25 Dec 1817 at Bristol St Paul) was also a
mason. Thus it seems almost certain that William Lambell Challenger was a
first cousin of Henry Challenger, ie. that their fathers, William Challenger
and John Philpott Challenger were brothers, the sons of William Challenger
and Elizabeth née Philpot(t).
Are any subscribers to this list researching either of these families?
