Hi Louise, Thank you for sharing the information on George Henry
Challenger's death certificate.
I believe we have corresponded in the past. I have your family in my tree.
George Henry Challenger was the son of Samuel Challenger (1829) who came
from Clutton, Somerset. He married Charlott (bn Langattock, Breconshire)
and settled in Aberdare by the 1851 census. You can view my family tree on
the following link.

Subject: [CHALLENGER] George Henry Challenger - Black Rock, Brynmawr circa
1882
Hi Everyone,
Just thought I'd post this one incase anyone had come across the entry on
GRO indexes and wondered where he fitted in ;)
Taken from the Death Certificate - which finally arrived yesterday (you can
tell when the Beeb have run a "Who do you think you are" series by the time
delay from GRO)
George Henry CHALLENGER
Died 12th December 1916 Parish of Coy?? Higher R.D. at Cwmciwc Colliery
Male Aged 34
Collier of No. 41 Southall Street, Brynna, Llanharan R.D.
Cause of Death: Suffocation due to a fall of roof at Cwmciwc Colliery
Accident
Certificate received from David Rees, Coroner for East Glamorgan. Inquest
held 12th December 1916
Death registered 20th December, 1916
Margaret Davies - Registrar.
Registration District Bridgend
Sub District Bridgend in the County of Glamorgan.
George Henry Challenger was the brother of my grandfather (Albert Edward
Challenger). They were sons of George Henry & Jane (nee Pritchard).
Brothers were born in Black Rock, Brynmawr, Breconshire - district
Crickhowell.
George - as I was told by my Nan - was living in lodgings at Brynna. I knew
he'd been killed in the pit "at Llanharan" but until yesterday I didn't
have
a death cert.
As far as I can find out, Glamorgan Record Office doesn't hold Coroners
Records from 1916 - the earliest for East Glam are 1955. I hope to find out
somemore info from back copies of the Western Mail or South Wales Echo for
that period. Bit of a cheek but if anyone has access to these and could
have a look (please) I'd be very grateful as I won't be "down home"
(Newport, Gwent) until next weekend and you know that patience was hiding
the day I was born and that's why I haven't got any :)
BTW this particular George Henry never married.
Regards
Louise - in a rather warm Staffordshire this evening
