Dear Marion et al
I am enjoying the Challenger group - thanks very much for starting it
I have the 1881 census on cd rom here so I have checked the male Challengers born Somerset
from
Andys list of 1851 census and have come up with the following. This is not foolproof,
because in
some cases the 1851 census birth dates may not be correct ( either they didnt know their
exact age
or perhaps told the odd fib or two especially if the wife was older than the husband) but
I hope it
helps. If anybody wants the 1881 census print out for a particular Challenger, please let
me know

Thomas 1 month born Clandown 1881 living Monmouthshire 1881 head of household
I am still looking for my gg grandfather Charles Challinger born born 1838
Camerton(according to
1881 census) I think he may be son of Thomas Challenger and Mary Cook (married 13 Jul
1817)
I found William 1839 christened Midsomer Norton on the IGI. His parents are listed as
Thomas
Challenger and Mary Cook. I think there maybe a younger sibling of this family Seymour
Challenger born 1841 Wales. I wonder if Thomas Chalenger and Mary nee Cook moved to
Wales
by 1851 - this would account for no mention of them or their family on the 1851 census .
Seymour was in Durham by 1881.His wife was Sarah born Somerset 1846 . They had by 1881 4
children, Frederick born 1866 Wales, Rose born 1868 Durham, Lilley born 1877 Durham and
Robert born 1881 Durham. My gg grandfather and family and Seymour and his family were
the
only 2 Challengers living in Durham on the 1881 census.
Incidentally has anyone any ideas of how they moved from Somerset to arrive in Durham by
1871.
(about 300 miles). I would imagine that the families were poor because they had to move
to find
work, so think probably trains were out. They could have walked but by that time Charles
would
have had a wife and 2 children under the age of 4. Would hitching lifts on the canal
boats have
been a possibility ?
Any infformation gratefully received

Many thanks Andy and David for all these Challenger entries.
That's just what I was hoping to see on this list. Some more family groups would
be nice too.
