Hi List,
I finally got my act together and now have a copy of the marriage certificate for Alfred
John Challenger (the brother of the above George) and Maggie Jane Challenger (the daughter
of the above George). I know it was and still is illegal but who am I to question the
why and wherefore:-))?
Anyway, the certificate shows George as the father of Maggie and Henry as the father of
Alfred. Therefore, theoretically at least, Henry was also the father of George - hope
this all makes sense? The marriage took place in 1901 at Nazareth Chapel, Llanelly, the
bride and groom both give Brynmawr as the residence at the time of their marriage.
The 1881 LDS census shows Alfred living with his mother Emma, who is a widow, also living
in the same household is another son Willie and a daughter Elizabeth who was married to a
Henry Thomas. The sons have Brecknock, Wales as a place of birth, Elizabeth is showing
Brynmawr and Emma is Bristol. Emma's age is given as 56. The family were living at
Llangoattock in 1881.
So my questions are - please has anyone come across a Henry & Emma Challenger? Or
any of the other names mentioned in the 1881? BTW I was told some years ago by the
Registrar at Tredegar that there is a death entry for an Emma, widow of Henry Challenger
but I haven't actually sent for the certificate.
Many thanks in advance
Louise
