Happy New Year Everyone.
Well, I’ve dithered about posting this – for reasons that will become
apparent – but I have been wondering if anyone has got lines of the family
in South Wales that they cannot find in the 41 – 91 Census, as in - they are
not there under any variation of spelling of Challenger?
My lot (headed by Henry & Emma Challenger) appear to be missing from 51 & 71
census although 41 & 61 there are entries for Henry Challenger and family.
Anyway, bored one day, I just did a Christian name search with date of birth
and resident in Wales & I believe I have tracked them down but listed under
PARFITT. Now I know Henry Challenger appears to be the son of Isaac &
Priscilla nee Parffitt but for the life of me I can’t work out why he should
use the surname on the 1851 census, when he and Emma appear to be lodging
with (I assume) his sister and her family (George BIRD and his wife Mary
Ann) I believe this Mary Ann to be a Challenger (and the sister of Henry)
before her marriage. George Bird was a witness at the marriage of Henry
Challenger & Emma Walker.
Relevant census entries for 61 and onwards are:-
1861 - RG9/4216 page 17 of 38.
Henry Challenger aged 36 born Clutton an Iron Miner & Beer Retailer. Emma
aged 35 born Bristol. Children Emily 16 born Tredegar, Ann aged 8 born
Aberaman, George aged 6 born Aberaman, Mary Ann aged 4 born Aberaman, and
Elizabeth Alice aged 10 months born Dukestown.
In 1871 no Henry and Emma Challenger but there is a Henry & Emma Parffit
(sic) again.
RG10/5586 page 32 of 34
Henry Parffit aged 46 born Clutton, Emma 46 born Bristol. Children were
George aged 17, born Mountain Ash, Mary Ann 14 born Mountain Ash, Elizabeth
A aged 10 born Tredegar, Charlot (sic) aged 8 born Breconshire (that was one
I didn’t know about), William H aged 5 born Brynmawr, Alfred aged 3 born
Brynmawr and also a grandchild Rosina aged 9 months born Brynmawr (heaven
knows where that one sprung from - anyone any ideas?)
By 1881 Henry Challenger has died. Date of death was 13.03.1875 buried at
Brynmawr Cemetery, place of death 115 King Street, Brynmawr.
RG11/5464 page 14 of 22]
Emma is living as a widow at 115 King Street aged 56 born in Bristol, with
her children Willie aged 14 born Breconshire, Alfred J aged 12 born
Breconshire, Henry Thomas son in law aged 22 and Elizabeth Thomas daughter
aged 20 born Brynmawr.
1891 and they are still in King Street.
RG12/4575 Page 13 of 20
Emma Challenger aged 67 born Bedminster Bristol, William H son aged 23 born
Brynmawr, Alfred T (?) grandson aged 19 born Brynmawr (don't know who his
parent was) & Alfred J son aged 21 born Brynmawr.
George Henry Challenger the son of George & Emma doesn’t show on the 1881
census but George PARFIT does.
Try this one for size:-
George Parfit (sic) age 27 Coal Miner born Gloucester, Bristol????
Jane Parfitt age 29 born Llanelly
John son age 9 born Llanelly
Ann age 5 born Llanelly
Hannah age 2 born Llanelly.
This little family is living as the next household to Abraham Pritchard,
coal miner & publican aged 60 and his wife and family. Abraham Pritchard was
my g.g.grandfather being the father of Jane.
In 1891 the Parfitts are now Challengers
RG12/4576 Page 5 of 6
George Challenger age 35 Coal miner born Aberaman, Glam
Jane age 39 born Llanelly
John D.P. Challenger age 19 born Llanelly,
Ann age 15 born Llanelly

Margaret J age 10 born Llanelly
George H age 7 born Llanelly
Emily age 5 born Llanelly

& Albert E (my grandfather) age 1/2 born Llanelly
You can see why I didn’t know how to post this one can’t you?
So, if you’ve lost a line - try Parfitt you never know what you may turn up.
But has anyone else come across what appears to be a name change or is it
just my stubborn, red headed lot that did it? Or am I on the wrong track
altogether and should I just stick with the Challenger census entries that I
have and ignore these Parfitts?
Regards
Louise
