I am looking for any information, assistance, or suggestions for
finding
my illusive ancestor, Thomas Chalk. He was born abt. 1826 somewhere in
Ireland. He married Irish born Julia Flannery (1827). I found this
family on the British census of 1861 living in Wednesbury Staffordshire
England. His 18 year old sister, Bridget was living with the family as
well as the following children:
Thomas age 14 born in Ireland
Mary age 8 born in Wednesbury
Bridget age 7 born in Wednesbury
John age 4 born in Wednesbury
Sarah age 2 born in Wednesbury
James was born shortly after the census was taken
The family then seemed to disappear into thin air. Even a professional
family historian could not find them on another census or even death
certificates for any member. She did find a marriage certificate for a
Mary, daughter of Thomas, and a fellow named Whelan, in 1879. They too
disappeared. John and James were back on the 1881 census living as
boarders in two separate households. John and James immigrated to the
United States in 1882. Until I found this family on the 1861 census, our
family had never heard of John's older siblings. Family stories have
been that Thomas died quite young but why can't we find a death
certificate?
Since he was a coal miner, I thought that perhaps he died in the mines.
However, I don't know where to begin to look for information on mining
disasters. I would appreciate any suggestions that anyone can offer.
Better yet, I would love to hear from anyone that is also a descendant
of my illusive Thomas.
